This story made our local news tonight. I was touched by the bond of man and dog and the generosity of the people who are making sure Zac gets home to his master's family.

OOhh how sad, poor zac. I am glad he came out relatively unscathed apart from the emotional toll of the loss of your master.

It has been on the news quite a bit here. Midwesterners seem to want to get involved. The Nebraska Humane Society does a good job of encouraging community awareness and participation when they think it will make a difference...

Nicola, Zac is a basenji mix who rode in his owner Bill's semi truck, keeping him company on the road. Bill had a heart attack while driving and crashed his rig. Unfortunately, Bill passed away. Rescuers found Zac, who was scratched up but otherwise unharmed. People are helping to get Zac back home to his family, who live is a suburb of San Diego. Bill leaves behind a wife and four children. The kids consider Zac alll they have left of their dad.

Kristen, thank you for providing the details of the story from your end. The news has been sparse on how the folks are rallying behind Zac over in Omaha.

This accident happened close to where I live. Donations poured in locally and one person said they would cover the cost of the entire flight home. They will save the donations that came in for any situation where a dog needs transport. The family is excited to get Zak back. I believe he is flying out of Omaha today. The gentleman's wife said it is the last thing she will have from her husband. The son knows how important this dog was to his dad and is glad Zak will be home soon. Not a happy ending, but Zak is going home to a family that will love appreciate him and will help them get through this rough time.

I am pretty sure Zak would bring happiness to the family. So sad.

I will watch this tomorrow, with a box of kleenex. I am very sure I am going to end up crying like a baby. I always wonder what would happen to my babies, if I die? Can't honestly think of anybody in my family treating them like furkids. Where would they go? Would they eventually put them in a shelter? Would they care for them as much as I do? Let me just stop or I will start... I hope this story as every dog story would have a happy ending.
