I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced an allergic reaction (with their corgi's) to pork? A couple of months after we got Violet, I fed a small piece of a ham sandwich - yes I know not the best thing for her, but I'm an easy touch when it comes to begging. This was after she had bacon and sausage on the weekends for a couple of months prior (did I mention I'm an easy touch?).
Anyway, she started acting like she needed to have a bowl movement but did not produce anything. This went on all day - and this was the weekend her brother Magnus was flying in from Texas to his new home with us, so I thought it might just be stress. Finally, on Sunday afternoon I took her to the emergency vet - right when I noticed bleeding. The vet said some dogs have an inability to digest pork, similar to an allergey. It causes inflamantion and bleeding inside and we are never to give them ANY pork product again. Since then, and this happened in 2007, she is fine and they absolutely do not get anything made of pork, no food (human or dog), chew sticks, etc.
I wondered if this was something common to the breed. My husband and I now feel guilty when we eat bacon at home - we've taken to buying turkey bacon and sausage so we can still share (again, we are easy touches) and not hurt them. But sometimes, especially with Easter right around the corner, I do miss Ham.
