Welcome to the club! LOL!

I don't know why mine did it especially since I fed him and he's not starving or anything like that.  A lot of people have suggestions as to how to stop your dog from eating poop.  They sound interesting but, I never tried any of their tactics.

In my case I kept him on a leash whenever we went out to do his business.  Every time he finished and wanted to turn around to eat it I would tug once sharply on his leash and tell him to 'Leave it' then I would praise and sometimes give him treats when he left it.  Before I used the leash, what he would do before I reached him was to eat as much as he could before I got to him and then he'd run off when I reached him.  That totally got me P.O.'ed! Hence the leash, that way I have control over the situation and he doesn't get the chance to even think about eating his poop.

I don't pick up his poop if he's still focused on it.  I make sure he's distracted before I'll pick up his poop.  I noticed that he'll pick up the habit again after watching me pick up his poop so, I make sure he's distracted before I'll hurry and scoop up his poop.  With consistent training he doesn't eat his poop anymore. Thank GOD!

He doesn't eat other dog poo, another thing I'm grateful for.  He'll smell it and that's it but, he'll eat cat poo.  I'm pretty sure it's cat poo because usually he has to unearth it.
