I have a 16 week old puppy named Olive. Our vet said that we could have her spayed any time after she is 5 months old. I was talking to Olive's breeder yesterday and she recommended that we wait until she is at least 8-9 months old. The breeder said that would allow her body to fill out and mature. She said that Corgis that are spayed too early tend to be longer legged and racier. She also said that Corgis generally don't go into heat until 9-12 months of age. What do you all think?? This is my first time posting. Should this have been in the forum instead of blog?

Welcome to the site! I had my female spayed at 4 months old.. She never even acted like she had had surgery and her incision was only an inch or so long. She recovered very quickly. She is now a normal sized corgi weighing 28 lbs with her short legs, can run like a deer, sheds all year long and is the queen of her castle. Perfectly normal in corgi land. I think that I would follow the advice of my vet. Good Luck. Olive is sure a cutie.

I had Reagan neutered at under 3 months, pretty much as soon as I could detect that both his testicles has descended. He's a year old now and 35lbs and filling out wonderfully and is not long legged at all.

I had Bailey neutered at 6 months. When he started getting too friendly with his stuffed bunny, I knew it was time! I always had my female animals spayed before they went into heat. The vet said that this was better for overall good health and there was no benefit to having a first heat.

I had LO neutured at 5 months, I have heard that about the long leggedness with boys too. I wish I had waited until 8 or 9 months.

My vet (also my cousin) said that 6 1/2 months is best and that it should be done before the first heat as this lowers the chance for breast tumors.

I had Teagen spayed between 8-9 months...I really think that she could have been done earlier with little difference I also had people tell me it was beneficial to let them go through a heat...She was my first female canine so I wasn't sure when to have her done. I posted some blogs about it and the info. I got back from members here said she could have mamory problems while in a heat cycle. the benefits of spaying before one out weighed any arguments to wait till after one so she was done.
