Molly, my almost 2-year-old Pembroke, has all of a sudden become scared of just about everything. She's always been a little bit skittish, but about two weeks ago, out of nowhere, it started becoming worse. Molly is afraid of trash bags, trash cans (they vary in size, large kitchen can and small bathroom one), large blankets, pots and pans, you name it! Every time I go to pick up a book to read, she shies away from it and goes and hides. We also used to play a game, where I would stick my foot under our big floor rug in the living room, and she'd pounce and try to dig my foot out. However, I tried playing this with her the other day and she ran away from me. My husband and I have never, NEVER abused her in any way, shape or form. We've had her since she was 3 months old, so there is no previous owner to question. If anyone could offer me any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have tried speak to her in a calm voice and show her that these objects are harmless, but it's no use. It breaks my heart to see her so scared, and although she is generally a very happy and bright dog, this unwarranted fright is becoming an issue.

Thank you all for your advice! As far as I know, she's been feeling fine, but I will definitely take her to the vet just to be sure. She runs around and plays all day, and is overall very happy, but when it comes to her fear triggers, she changes completely. Mary, I will check out that book---I could surely use all the help I can get! Kerry, Molly is spayed, and has been for over a year now so luckily I can rule that out as being a cause. Sarah, I am very concerned---her last vet visit was in September, so I will look into making her another appointment soon. Thanks again for your advice, all!

Have you ruled out any physical problems, maybe she's feeling ill or hurts somewhere? Rosie is a fearful pup too, we've been using the 'calming signals' that I found in a book called "On Talking Terms with Dogs" by Turid Rugaas. Its really helped Rosie alot.I found the book at the local library, I think its available on Amazon too. Best of luck to you and Molly, keep us posted! Mary and Rosie

Have you considered that she might be more reactive now because she might be in pain? I would be very concerned about such a radical change in behavior. You might try taking her to the vet.
