My wonderful, loving corgi, Casey has cancer. He is only 5 years old. He also has been having seizures for about a year now. I have them pretty much controlled with an herb formula I found on the web. 4 weeks ago, the vet found a tumor on the roof of his mouth. He removed it along with the 4 upper front teeth that were very loose and hurting Casey. We treated an infection with antibiotics. He seems much better---very happy to be able to eat again! I did alot of research on the web and I decided to attack the cancer with a high protein diet ( I've been cooking for him) and I started him on a number of vitamins and herbs. He seems to have some of his corgi-pep back! I am not going to put him through radiation or cemo, but I'm not going to stand by without trying to help him. No matter what happens, I will know in my heart that I have done everything that is humanly possible to beat this. I also plan on having the vet check him out every month, so if the tumor returns, we can take care of it right away. If anyone has a corgi with these problems, it would be great to hear from you. I'm always looking for helpful suggestions from someone who is or has gone through this.

I hope that everything goes well with you and Casey, it can be trying at times but you are doing the right thing, and hopefully it works out. I know how tough it can be taking care of a dog in that condition, but we have to make the best of the time we are blessed with our furry friends with.

I did find this online:

"There are many different types of chemotherapy agents and each has a different likelihood of causing side effects. If your pet is treated with drugs known to cause certain side effects, we will prescribe medications to help prevent these complications, such as antiemetics (anti-nausea and vomiting medication). In addition, we will give you instructions on what to do if and when a problem arises. We seldom see severe side effects as described above; it is estimated to be less than 5% of all pets receiving chemotherapy. With proper management, most animals recover uneventfully within a few days."

And that is from a different source than the one I mentioned from memory above.

I am so, so sorry to hear about your sweet Casey. :-( I hope he is able to still get joy out of life.

I did just read an article from a veterinarian that said that the vast majority of dogs and cats do not experience the side effects with chemo and radiation that humans typically do; their body structures are quite different and something like 80% don't really experience serious side effects. They said many people shy away from those treatments because they don't want their furry friends to suffer, but quite often that is not the case, and of course if they have a bad reaction you can stop after one treatment. Just something to consider. Of course only you and your vet would know what is best for your loving friend.

I wish you both the best. Big hugs.

I had some conversations with a grizzled old surgeon when a close friend was dying of hopeless cancer. He pointed out that some doctors will aggressively treat ANYTHING, even when it's hopeless. It's a balancing act: will treatment be worth it? What will it achieve? Strive for quality time with Casey in the time still left. Whatever you do, just spend good time with your friend. A tragedy to lose such a young friend. Life can't last forever. Sometimes love -- at least it's memory -- can. I'm so sorry.

Keep up the love as you always have and each day you have with him will be a day well spent. Always keep the faith, too. You never know how life plays out. Keep us posted.
