Hi all,

Coby broke his tooth by chewing nylabone dental dinosaur on Tuesday night.

I visited several vets with this photo, and they were saying that either taking tooth out or root canal are the options.

and... regular vets are not doing root canal surgery, and i had to make an appointment with specialist, but then first appointment available is on April 12, 2012. (actually, i took that date tho....)

but then, i really don't want to take his tooth out.... he's only 4 years old... (well,, turning 5 years old next week)

also, an appointment seems too far away, im hoping it doesn't get infected.

anyone who been through same situation, please let me know... what will be the best way for Coby.

Thanks,

I just went through this with Franklin. Honestly a root canal isn't always an option and you may end up going to the specialist, having x-rays taken, only to be told that the tooth needs to come out. To me it looks like the fracture goes all the way to the gum line, which means it is likely it goes under the gum line as well and into the root. If the root is damaged as well then a root canal is not an option. I'd say just have a regular vet pull the tooth and save yourself the money, and your dog the pain and risk of infection. The tooth is at risk of getting infected from the moment the pulp is exposed so by the 12th he very well may develop an abcessed tooth. Take him to the vet tomorrow or Friday, have them evaluate the tooth in person, get pain meds and antibiotics and maybe even have them pull it now. Franklin is only 3, he had is tooth pulled and is totally fine. He still chews rawhides on that side and seems no worse for the wear. Only difference is that I need to pay more attention to the bottom tooth because tartar will build up on that tooth faster.

Melissa recently had to deal with a broken tooth with Franklin, so hopefully she'll be able to give you some advice on this subject.  I hope they're able to get something done soon!  :(
