DSC00589.JPGI just adopted my brothers 3 yr old corgi. He had him on purina chow food. After reading and searching I have changed Earl over to Pure Balance Wild and Free. Bison and Pea recipe. Grain, soy, corn and wheat free. 4 star. He has hip dysplasia. Since I have had him 1 1/2 weeks, he has no steps to climb and no hard wood floors. I take him to the park everyday after dinner at 4pm. We sometimes walk during the day also. He is doing so much better. Now my brother feeds his 7 yr old corgi the same food. Elton, is having the same problems climbing stairs and walking on the floors. So today I told him to get more throw rugs and carry him up the stairs or make a carpeted ramp. Just 2 high stairs is how many Elton has to climb but it is to much for these dogs. I knew nothing about corgis till my brother. Well, he says I can't feed Earl any human food. That he is a pure breed and he will get sick. Well, he eats my baked cod and sweet potatoes. He loves cherrios and peanut butter. Just a little as a treat. So to all you corgi lovers, as a beginner am I doing O.K? Can I fed Earl other human foods? And is it ok to feed him 1/2 c. morning and 1/2c. for dinner?  I like that idea of jay and deedees. I think feeding twice a day helps with energy and blood sugar. Thanks for any tips. I'm still very new with Earl.

I'm so happy for you.  It sounds like he's lucky to have you.  You'll do fine with him.

Thank you Beth and Becky Focht for the tips and comments. I started today feeding Earl 1/2c morn and for dinner. I will be cautious on how much I feed for treats and will for sure watch his weight. I love him so much :).

Aw, thanks for taking in a dog with some issues! Just monitor the hip dysplasia; many Corgis look dysplastic on x-ray but don't really show any symptoms. Out of shape or obese Corgis may get sore where a fitter Corgi wouldn't, so keep up with the walks. A healthy Corgi can handle full sets of stairs but shouldn't play on them.

For human food, dogs can eat most lean cooked meats (beef, chicken, fish), yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, many fruits and veggies but NOT onions, grapes or avocado. Peanut butter is popular but very high in calories. Apples and bananas are good and most dogs like them. Canned fish like salmon or mackerel is a favorite but high in salt so don't give it all the time.

I prefer to feed twice a day. 1/2 cup twice a day is ok for some dogs, too much for others; my Maddie only gets 1/3 c twice a day but Jack gets a heaping 1/2 twice a day. Watch weight closely. Corgis should have a defined hourglass figure with a large chest, smaller waist, and larger hips. Most Corgis you see are overweight to obese so don't go by that. The show people keep weight pretty good, so look up pictures of show dogs and agility Corgis to train your eye on what a proper weight Corgi looks like.

Welcome and enjoy him!

He is so cute Priscilla!  Yes, it is ok to feed him 1/2 c. in the a.m. and 1/2 c. in p.m.  Just keep an eye on his weight and adjust his food accordingly.  I feed my girl 1/3 c. twice a day also.  She is on the petite side though and only weighs 21 lbs.  Yes, you can feed him some people food but just be careful of what you are feeding and don't make it in excess, sounds like you are only giving as treats.  Cheerios and peanut butter are ok once in a while.  I give Foxy pumpkin, yogurt (plain), cottage cheese, green beans (frozen or fresh, not canned), blueberries, strawberries.  I just mix it in her food. I don't do it everyday either.  Good for you for feeding him a better food and trying to educate yourself on what food is good for him.  Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine.  I'm sure everyone's corgi's (unless they medically can't) get some people food every now and then.
