Sooo, we're out taking our evening walk. It's a pleasant night and the rain is just a memory. One of our neighbors is getting out of his truck and his wife comes out of the house through the garage, letting their two boxers come out with her. They come straight out to us, but the man right away begins calling them back. The wife says "It's ok, they're friendl..." Bam! One of the boxers had rolled Sidney onto his back and was attacking his underbelly! I hate it when I panic and start yelling...all I remember was screaming "get your dog off of him, get your dog off of him!". It seemed like forever before the guy came up and grabbed the boxer, while I was trying to pull Sidney away by the leash. I don't know WHAT I should have done in a circumstance like that. Grab for the Boxer? Grab for Sidney?

Guy takes his dog back and the woman is extremely apologetic. One of those "she's never done anything like that before" apologies. She asks me several times if Sidney is ok. He seems none the worse for wear, happily. He got up, shook himself off and proceeded to woof at the boxer, as if to give her a piece of his mind. "You want a piece of me...huh? Want a piece of me?" It wasn't a hostile bark, more questioning. Then he kicked dirt in her direction. We continued on our walk and he does just fine. As we passed by the house again I watched him to see if he was nervous about it, but he was fine. It took ME a while to calm down, though! I was not really too mad at the family, just scared for my little dog. I hope they will think twice before letting them out into the front yard, though!

Sidney was sporting his brand new Christmas bandana. I think the boxer was jealous.

Sporting good stores, WalMart and I think even Home Depot carries pepper spray.

I bought a pepper spray to carry when hiking, since we have mountain lions and coyotes. I guess I should carry one on neighborhood walks too, not a bad idea. I'd want to buy anothyer since, if I take the one out of my hiking pack, I'm not likely to remember to put it back! If only I could remember where I bought it from. Do any of you know where I can buy pepper spray?

Poor Sydney. We've had a couple encounters like that too. I do get mad at the people. I get mad that they think they are the only people who don't have to obey the leash laws and for not knowing their dogs well enough to know that they don't always come when called. I don't care how well behaved a dog is, I don't want it approaching my dog unless I give the ok and when a loose dog continues to approach even though it's owner is telling it to come back, that's not very reassuring.

I was told that if dogs are fighting you should pull the attacking dog back by it's tail or hind leg. Grabbing the collar or front end can make the already aggressive dog turn on you. You can always carry pepper spray in case you need to use it to protect yourself or your dog, just don't go around macing every dog you see. :)

I'm sure it was the bandana. When it comes to my pups, I would dive into a pool of scorpians to get them out. Breaking up a dog fight...yeah I know....never do this, never do that....sorry- My foot is going up some Boxer butt is a heartbeat! Love how he kicked the dirt...you go boy! GET SOME!

OMG Geri!!! I am sooo glad you and Sidney are ok. I would have freaked out. Totally... Like yelling at the people and trying to grab the other dog off my Kota. I know that's not the right response, but, I would do it anyway. I would rather me get hurt than Kota. I get free medical. He gets expensive medical. Sidney is very handsome in his new bandana. I tried putting a bandana on Kota. Diesel and him play so much, It only stayed on him for like 2 minutes. For real. It wasn't untied, It was slipped over Kota's head. I even tried kind of tying it to his collar, but it still didn't stay on. The collar did, but not the bandana. Which kind of sucks coz Diesel's dad put one on Diesel and I'm jealous that Kota doesn't get to wear one... :( boo hoo hoo.

Glad to hear Sidney is OK and it's good he wasn't nervous going by the house again.
That's funny he kicked dirt in her direction.
