We took Merlin swimming for the first time yesterday. Everything seemed to have gone well. This morning, we noticed that his bed was saturated. Didn't smell like urine, didn't know what it was. Brought him to the living room to hang out with us as we usually do and noticed that he's been drooling excessively. Any ideas? Could he have swallowed too much chlorinated water at the pool yesterday? There are no other symptoms (no vomit, lack of appetite, diarrhea). It's as if he's not wanting to swallow his own saliva.

After 72 hours, Merlin is back to normal again. No more drooling! What a relief!! We will take him swimming again but will make sure not to splash water to close to his face/mouth again!

We wanted peace of mind so we took him to the emergency vet, just got back. The vet didn't see anything really wrong with him except that his throat was a little red and possibly irritated. She gave us carafate meds to help coat his throat. She also offered antibiotics (amoxillicin) but we opt out of that. @Sam Tsang -- no, his tongue looked normal. I guess we'll wait it out and see. Thank you so much guys for your replies!! Means a lot!!!

Hi Joy and Alex, was Merlin's tongue long and bright red with thick saliva?

Excessive drooling is often a sign of nausea. He could have just over did it yesterday or he could be feeling ill if he did drink the chlorinated water. Chlorine can cause vomiting, diarrhea, ulcers in the mouth/nose/skin, etc so just watch him and make sure he starts looking like he's feeling better in the next few hours. If not call your local emergency vet and see if they have any suggestions. Try a bland diet just for today to help calm his tummy. You can either do boiled chicken and white rice, or low fat cottage cheese and white rice.
