Are any of you corgi owners using your corgis for therapy dogs? People always tell me both of my dogs would be great for it - does anyone have any info?
Thanks!
Donna
Tank took his CGC and Delta Society test at the same time. He did beautifully in both. Tank loves visiting. He does tons of tricks and the folks at the nursing homes and hospitals get a real kick out of him.
Sidney passed his CGC test and also the Therapy DOg Training. He is now part of Love on a Leash and we go on our first visit this Thursday. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try my best to answer :)
We used the program through Therapy Dogs International.
We took our CGC test concurrently with the TDI test. We had to pay both fees, but it was one test, which made it easier. Our class had some people who just were doing CGC, and some who were doing TDI. If you go to TDI's website, they tell you exactly what the test entails, so you can see if your dog is ready to go to that class, or needs an earlier obedience class first.
Our trainer brought in wheel chairs and walkers and the like, to get the dog used to them.
TDI provides insurance at no extra charge, to cover your visit. There are specific guidelines to qualify for the insurance.
We were happy with it. Our trainer runs a large group that visits many area facilities, so we can go as often or as seldom as we like. If you check out my blogs, I wrote about our first visit about a month ago. The only downside to Corgis is they are a bit of an awkward size; too big to sit on laps, but a bit short to be easily reached from a wheelchair. I'm thinking of training Jack to "paws up" and rest his front paws on a chair on command.
