Well, tomorrow is the day we're going to visit the shelter (4.5 hours away) and meet the Corgi we really hope to take home. And boy, am I excited and nervous, so I hope I can sleep tonight. We bought most of the stuff we will need for the trip home with him (fingers crossed). Here's a list of stuff we're bringing:

Leash
Car harness
Treats
Stuffed toy
Doggy bags
Doggy wipes
Water with a bowl
Sheet
Towel

And here's our plan: We're driving there tomorrow morning and will meet him whenever we get there. If they decide we are the right people to give him his forever home they will take him to get neutered the next day. We booked a cheap hotel to stay the night so we won't have to make the drive twice and so we can bring him home as soon as possible. We'll drape a sheet with a towel under it over the back seats (the towel only because it's a long drive and we don't know if he will get car sick) and secure him with the car harness. I really hope he'll be comfortable, especially since he will have just come out of surgery hours earlier. Will he most likely just be out of it the whole way home? I'm hoping so because I can't imagine being woozy and in pain and in a moving car for hours would feel very good. Anyway, we'll buy a crate for him and his food after we meet him and the shelter staff (to see how big he is, and also to ask if he has any known allergies or intolerances).

We still haven't picked a name!

Keep us in your prayers!

We're here in the hotel room in Kingman right now after getting everything done (and taking a nap). Guess what.. We're going to be taking him home tomorrow!!! I can't explain how excited I am right now. He's just the sweetest dog ever, and we love him so much already. He is such a nice dog, but he seemed a little distracted from being in the shelter with so many other loud dogs. He was shaking in his cage when we first saw him, but he warmed up to us after going to the quieter play area. He didn't make a peep at all while we were there. And he's a licker! So sweet! Ahhh, we just can't wait until he's home and settled in. :):):) Thanks for the comments, prayers, and thoughts everyone!

what a beautiful boy! He looks so friendly and loving! I am sure you will be able to take him home with you! The markings around his eyes look like a mask...maybe Bandit would be a good name?

What a handsome guy...Looks like my Brodie who is snoozing peacefully behind me in my office. I would concur with using the crate for the trip home. Good luck to all of you! How very exciting!

I hope it all works out for you Abbea. I'm sure it will. :)

When we got Finn he just laid on the back seat and napped. I sat back there with him and he did well on the 7 hour drive, of course he was just a tiny puppy. Where is the shelter at? You may want to stop for a potty break or two but be sure to lift him in and out of the car so he doesn't tear his stitches. Also, be sure and ask when he is ok to eat and drink since you have to wait a while after surgery.

When Finn was neutered he got the good drugs and slept but his neuter was more complex so I don't know what they will give your boy. I think my Mom said her boy got a pain shot after surgery which made him zonk out.

For traveling we use a leash that has a seat belt attachment so it locks into the seat belt then you can attach it to whatever you like so we use a harness. We keep it short enough that he cannot get off the seat but there is still enough room for him to lay on the seat.

As for a crate, we have the 36" and it's perfect. I wouldn't go smaller if he is going to have to be crated for extended periods of time like Finn. We went with one of the wire ones that you can fold up. Provides good ventilation and is easy for travel.

I'm excited for you. Now when you come to a meet up you'll have you very own Corgi to bring! I can't wait to meet him.

Stay tuned for later tonight. The hotel we're staying in has free wi-fi internet so I'll be able to post about what happens.

Thanks for the comments everyone! We're getting ready to leave now. We'll be buying the crate after we see him today, and if he really can't sit still or get comfortable in the harness we'll stop and set the crate up for him, as much as I worry about what would happen in an accident. I just hope it will fit in our little Honda Civic sedan..

And don't worry, I will be in the back seat with him. I would want nothing else. :)
