I'm going to be getting a corgi puppy soon and I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas or opinions on what color he will be? Will he stay a black tri or will he go red/blonde? I know it's not a for sure thing but I would still like to hear peoples opinions. :)

Here's some pictures of Orion's color transformation so you can see how they change over time:
Two days (he's got the spot on his head)

Two weeks:

About six weeks:

Nine weeks: (notice he still barely has any red on his butt and still has the dark crown over his head)

Three months: (notice he still has a bit of a darker crown on his head)

And the four month picture I posted below. Of course not every pup follows the exact same time line but I figure this is what you can kind of expect to see if Odin turns into a RHT. Also, I almost named Orion Odin ;) but settled on Orion instead

That really very interesting! I know we can't always be 100% sure but I'm going to bet on Odin being a redhead tri. From all the opinions and infromation I have recieved it seems to make the most sense to me. I've looked at many tri puppies and from what I've seen, he looks a lot more like the redhead tri puppies then the black tri puppies. His sibs are either brownish/redish with white, black and white, or tri(which only one other one is a tri and will probably be a redhead too) but it seems as so none will be black tri puppies. Also, does this little black corgis muzzle look different from other corgi pups? This was the puppy we had thought about getting but decided on Odin b/c of his playful personality.

This is Marlee at 7 weeks, the black triangles tips inside the ears usually mean the puppy might still stay black headed. If the inside of the ears are all red, it should be a red headed tri. From what I've read in genetics the red head tri gene is dominant to the black headed tri gene. But the red/blonde(no black) gene is dominant to both red tri and black tri. The puppy’s mom has 2 genes for black tri, and the father has one gene for red/blonde and one gene for red tri. This would be true if there is a red tri puppy from the pair. In fact this pairing should not produce black tri puppies. The mom will give one gene to the puppy and the dad will give one gene to the puppy . Your puppy got a red tri gene from his dad and a black tri gene from his mom. And since red tri is dominant, he should have a red head. Here is a link to the corgi color genetic site http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/art_color.html . But as we all know, we are still learning about genetics, and our assumptions don't always hold true 100% of the time. (Can you tell I’m a biology teacher?)

He'll definitely be tri, though his head may turn all red or be red with sabling, or stay black and tan Here's Orion (red headed tri) as a baby:

Here's him now at four months:

Though his head started out darker it slowly faded. Also he barely had any red on his front legs and now they are very red, same with his back legs. His ears have always had a red rim and I've heard this is a way to tell: if they are dark rimmed they'll probably be a black headed tri, and if they are red rimmed they'll be a red headed tri. Notice Laika's black rimmed ears, as she is a black headed tri:

I think so too. I will adore him no matter what color he turns. :)

I'm pretty positive he will be a RHT! Whatever he is going to be he is a cutie now!

Oh, and the reason I think he'll be RHT is because the insides of his ears are already completely red, from what I can tell. Also, his coloring looks almost exactly like the beagle pups someone I work with just bred, and they are about Odin's age. The beagles will, of course, be all RHT's. I think that if he were going to stay black, there'd be not so much red yet, but that's just a guess.

Here's a picture of Maddie at 11 weeks (courtesy of her breeder; we got her as an adult). She's the RHT in my profile pic. Notice all the black still around her face:

Also, he does have some brownish redish tips on his black hairs.

The Black tri is Odins dad and the Blonde one is his mom.
Thank you for responding by the way. :)
