How could you not love the Corgi?(: haha well I have to wait a little while until I can get one but I hope I can! I am excited to see more pictures of her!
We are with Love on a Leash, although there are many therapy dog organizations out there. They want their dogs to be a year old before starting training, so you are on the right track. Until then, get all the training you can; it is good for both of you and promotes a wonderful bond. I'd swear Sidney knows what I want him to do before I tell him.
With Love on a Leash, the initial requirement is that you and your dog have completed basic obedience. Then you take a six-week therapy dog training course, at the end of which is an evaluation. If you pass, the next step is an "In training" bandana and 10 supervised visits. At the end of the 10 visits you are evaluated again, and if all goes well you are fully certified.
We ended up doing school and library events because of Sidney's stature. He is too short to be easily petted from a wheelchair and too heavy, generally, to be in a patient's bed. Because of his bad hips, he can't hold a "paws up" position. With kids, everyone sits on the floor, so Sidney is at the perfect height to be enjoyed!
