We used to stop at yard sales and buy small, gently used stuffed toys for 25 cents each, remove the eyes and plastic parts, wash them in the washing machine and then let our dogs destroy them. Yes, they did make a mess, but they enjoyed killing them immensely, and at 25 cents per murder victim it was worth it ! They never ate the stuffing, they just left it everywhere for me to clean up. However, that's definitely something to be sure about, so based on Joy's comment I wouldn't leave a dog alone with a stuffed toy, and would watch carefully to see how the killing progresses and if scarfing down the carnage is part of the process, then pull the toys permanently.
That is proof of exactly why I've always wondered why they sell the un-stuffed toys. Isn't it just giving them a head start on the murder ?
@Joy,
I don't buy stuffed toys either. These were given by a friend and it took me longer to clean up than they spent on the destruction. Randy wasn't much of a destroyer (except shoes, which was allowed) but when Reese arrived, she taught him all sorts of new types of destruction.
Very funny, and all too familiar! This is why we don't by stuffed toys any more: My Aussie-mutt dissects them and my corgi-girl eats the stuffing. The last one resulted in a VERY messy bowel obstruction and a $600 vet bill.
