Dante "drumsticks" Doak

Hi everyone. Well, I'm new to this website and so far I'm really excited I came across it. We have a pup, Dante, who is the joy of our lives! We just moved to Louisville, KY, to be teachers this coming school year. We call him "drumsticks" because he loves letting his back legs hang straight behind him when he lies down and we say that they look like nice, meaty chicken drumsticks.

I already am dreading being away from Dante so much every day, but last week we had a teaching orientation for 8-9 hours a day and he handled it okay being in the kitchen. I would love any advice from anyone who has to leave their puppy alone for a long time everyday. He doesn't have any accidents when we leave him in the kitchen (it's about a 5' by 8' area for him to be). He does still have accidents if we leave him gated in a larger area, like the dining/living room.

Also, if anyone has advice about how to help one floppy ear come up. Dante has ENORMOUS ears...the breeder warned me they would take a while to come up! Well, his right one has been perky for about 6 weeks now and while the left one gets some definite hang time, especially when he's running around or lying on his side, it doesn't come up. I read online a couple months ago that unprocessed cheese helps give them extra calcium to help the cartilage, so I give him half a string cheese every morning (it's the absolute highlight of his existence!). I'm not too worried about it because I've read enough things that say that it will come up eventually, but I just would like to help his process along! I have tried taping a couple lightweight things on his ear, like cardboard, but he goes insane and finds a way to swat it off.

We are getting him "snipped" as I call it tomorrow for his 5-month birthday (the absolute earliest the vet would do it...haha). So, happy birthday Dante! We wanted to get it out of the way before we start teaching next week. Does anyone have any advice on what to do after the procedure?

Comment by Stephanie on August 2, 2009 at 12:20pm: Welcome! I live in Lexington and am also a teacher. Bear does great in his crate while we're gone during the day. He goes in at 6:30 and someone is always home to let him out at about 4. He just got fixed a few weeks ago - our vet didn't use stitches, she used the superglue for skin stuff and he did great. The night after his procedure he had some diarrhea so we just sat outside for about two hours while he pooped and scooted, pooped and scooted. But he was fine by the next morning. Good luck!

Comment by the Doaks on August 2, 2009 at 8:05am: haha...I know, Dante is getting bigger, over 20 pounds now, so maybe turkey legs would be more appropriate at this point! What's funny now is that he tends to lie down in a way where he is covering all his limbs, so he looks just like a blob. I always say: "Dante, where are your limbs?"

Comment by Nicola Porter on August 2, 2009 at 7:59am: Welcome, it is a great site isn't it. My first corgi Max was a little heavier than LO so we called him fatty fatty no naddy. As you can already see those little back legs look so yummy sticking out behind em, we call them turkey legs as that's what they look like to us.
