Rimadyl

MaGuire, at 14, has started having back leg problems. He was put on 37.5 mgs (1/2 pill) of Rimadyl twice a day. Recently, side effects of increased thirst, being hyper and vomiting once during the night are occuring. Also, we having having issues getting out in time to urinate in the morning even tho we go out several times before bed. Yesterday, I cut back the Rimadyl to 18.75 (1/4 pill) and there was no vomiting last night. I will check with the Vet also. Has anyone tried Osteo-Biflex or something similar? Also, has anyone had problems with their Corgi and Rimadyl? Thanks for any information you can give me!!

Comment by Amy Freed on November 29, 2010 at 4:13pm: He had his last blood test on November 8, 2010 and the Vet said it was within normal limits. His previous and first blood test before he started Rimadyl was October 7, 2010. The vomit started within the last week to 10 days, is a one time thing in the middle of the night except for yesterday when there was a small "one time" in the morning. I recently changed dog food so that could be a factor. Today, I'm not noticing increased drinking, hyperactivity or urination. He seems to be his "normal" and able get around just as well on the 1/4 tablet as the half. Will continue to monitor.

Comment by Melissa and Franklin! on November 29, 2010 at 2:50pm: If your pup has started vomiting and you think it is from the Rimadyl and not another cause you need to see your vet ASAP. Rimadyl, like many other NSAIDS, can cause ulcers as well as liver problems. There are other NSAIDS out there to try and a blood test may be necessary to determine if there is liver damage from the meds. At 14 its a good idea to do a blood test bi-annually, or yearly at the absolute least, because things change quickly in older dogs and cats. The increased thirst and increased urination may be symptoms of something else, like diabetes, cushings, etc. and not the medication. When was his last blood test?

Comment by Patti on November 29, 2010 at 8:50am: Marvel - my Kai has taken Rimadyl for a few years now. same dosage as your MaGuire. periodically (1 or 2x month) he will throw up, but has never had increased thirst or hyperactivity. Kai is 7 and has multiple levels of mild arthritis in spine. His vet just upped his med's, as I've recently posted and many others here gave me great advice. My vet put Kai on a med called Dasuquin with MSM which is supposed to be great (joint health supplement - glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin and avocado). Good luck!
