Hello, all. I'm so glad to see this group on the site.

We're new to Toronto (from Oklahoma, USA to be exact) and invite your winter tips for our two Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Aquinas and Athena. This is our first time living in a truly wintry and snowy climate and we're concerned about our dogs' paws, warmth, etc. Please let me know if you have any tips!

Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Tropical Toronto~! We are from Toronto as well. With Orlando (2 year old pembroke) we spent alot of money buying shoes for him. Most of them just keep falling off and they get lost. We ended up buying a pair (2 pairs) on line from a wonderful lady in Halifax. I think it was close to 80 dollars though for the two. He needed small. They have lots of velcro and very well fitted. Been 1 month, and he hasn't lost any shoes yet. But yes, you definately need shoes for your pooch. The salt has been eating his paws raw to the point (last year) where he was barely able to walk. Pats to your pooch and cheers! /Benson
Welcome to the group!
Well, we live in the country in Prince Edward Island where salt is not an issue (the gov't doesn't use salt because it is an agricultural area)so we don't have to use winter boots on Butter. Butter LOVES the snow and runs through it, eats it. When he gets in too deep, he turns around on his own and finds another way back. I wouldn't worry about coats...Corgis have double fur coats and are warmer than we are.

I walk Butter at night in very cold temperature along icy or snowy roads with a flashlight. He loves it. He can't wait to get outside. Warning to the humans though...both my husband and I fell this year. I just bought something called x-trackers at Kent Home Hardware (probably have them at Canadian Tire). They strap on the bottoms of my boots. They are just for when I walk Butter. However in Toronto where they use salt it may not be as slippery as here.

One of Butter's favourite things to do when I walk him is too stop and pick up pieces of ice and snow and chew them on the walk; he is too funny.

Overall I don't think you have to worry about the Corgis, probably more about keeping yourselves warm.

If you look into the Snow Corgis group you'll see lots of pics of Corgis enjoying the snow and they all love it. Our Corgi was gotten from a breeder who did all her training of her Corgis in the snow. So don't worry about temperature.

Joy and Butter

Butter running.

Butter eating/grazing snow.
Our corgis have been house bound for a bit now, very unusual for Chilliwack, but be got more than 32cm again last night.

It's mot too cold for them, just extremely deep snow, and extremely slippery too.

You should worry about yourself and keep warm first...these dogs don't seem to mind the cold.
Me too!! I'd love some advice/tips for winter!!!

I'd love to know if any of you put jackets/coats on your Corgi's? This is our first year owning Mikey and I'm already fretting about winter ;)

We live in Edmonton so it gets VERY cold here (Salt is also not a worry for us, as it's too cold here to use it! They use gravel here!).

It just seems like he has absolutely no 'undercoat' to him at all. I know it's August but most dogs have some undercoat all year....so I'm wondering if that's a Corgi thing or maybe whatever he's mixed with. At any rate, do any of you use jackets?

Also, we spend a ton of time exercising him-I've read that's very "Corgi" to be so full of energy and need lots of exercise. So what do you guys do in the winter to exercise them? I cannot picture either of making an hour long walk in minus forty or my rollerblades working very well on ice :P
I'm with you on this one! I was just looking through the forums for winter tips. I'm from edmonton too, and I worry about Tuesday and the cold.
