How do you make a Corgi make sounds; I hear people saying that they "talk" to you
ours never made a sound until we had him about 3 weeks, then he barked for the 1st time. I have never heard him "talk" to me. Today I tried howling like a wolf and he made a very little howl and ran to the door to go out and to see the wolf. I would like to teach him to be more vocal but how do you do it?

Dexter is 7 months old and not so much "talks" but YELLS at us... "chase me", "pet me", "feed me faster"... As far as I can tell, he barks this way to engage us (I've seen him use that bark with other dogs in the Dog Park to get them to play with him, which usually has the opposite reaction). For a little guy his bark is BIG... low and LOUD and knock you down powerful.
At night when there is a strange noise Dexter gives out a quiet warning bark (more muffled than his YELL) and he will only do it once or twice until I acknowledge that I am aware of it as well.
In the mornings when he is waking up he'll have his Chewbacca growl/yawns... those I adore.
Be satisfied with a quiet dog at this point. I'm sure his bossy Corgi nature will come out at some point when he wants to tell you something.

Yeah, they definitely have a big dog bark that you wouldn't expect from such a small body. Between him and my lab/pit mix, we've got great watch dogs. Tucker doesn't bark often and he doesn't scrunch his face often, but when he does, he looks very much like a pit bull. Maintenance guy told me that the first time he came over, he had to give a treat to the "pit mix" in order to get in the house to fix the heater. Funny considering that Tucker's more likely to lick a murderer to death than he is to bite him. I've noticed that just the fact that he looks like a "pit mix" is enough to make people wary when the come knocking on the door. Yeah, I don't worry about burgulars too much, between our three alarms (the collie is a big barker, too, but she has a loud, girly bark)
There are definitely benefits to having such a deep, loud bark. No one would guess that it was a 25 pound dog on the other side of the door. ;)

Enjoy the quiet while you can, because it won't last long. LOL. When Ein was little, he hardly made a sound. Whenever he'd bark, we thought it was so cute. When he was one, he learned what the word "bark collar" meant because we could never get him to stop. Seriously, the boy barks at everything now. He barks at things outside, he barks at the other dogs, he barks when I laugh. He also has several words or phrases that always make him bark:
belly button
Who's there?
I'm gonna get you
Who's that?
Go get 'em
footsies
Tucker feet (or "get the Tucker feet")
Get the Einsy butt (or just "Einsy butt")
If a firetruck passes directly in front of the house, he howels. But if it's just off in the distance, he barks (we have a fire station a few doors down). The rest of his talking is random, but probably only about 10% or less of the sounds he makes are talking. The rest is just really loud barking.

Yawn barking and Elephant noises are my two favorites. I'm guessing that Buttercup is just set in his ways, and probably gets enough attention so he doesn't have to talk.

My corgis make these howly, gurgly noises! They ALWAYS do it when I first greet them in the morning and anytime they yawn, and sometimes they do it just to "talk." It's so funny! But I think some dogs, just like some people, are just more inclined to be vocal than others. Sounds like you got the quiet kid. =) I have noticed that depending on the tone of my voice they are more or less likely to do it. I am slightly crazy and tend to sing all the time, to everything, including my dogs...like I will just kind of sing-song whatever I am saying to them, and then they talk back more often. Maybe crazy. Might work though!

My corgi Musso will "wooooo" almost on command. If he isn't in a wooo-ing mood I can't make him do it, but I can get him to do it most of the time.

That is very cute-a corgi "wolf" howling; I wish I could get mine to do that. I used to have a Siberian Husky and he howled a lot and I loved it. I have tried teaching it to Buttercup but when I howl, he runs to the door to see if a wolf is there. LOL

Roxy talks ALL THE TIME. We even call her "The Opinionated Pickle." (don't ask).
She makes the Wookie noises, she howls, she does the little growling arrooorooroo, she grunts, sometimes she makes a sound exactly like a quacking duck..... and she LOVES to tattle. Whenever we come home she gives us the full rundown of which cat did what bad thing and how she tried to stop them but they were too awful and we should give them away.
Of all the dogs my husband and I have had, she is by far the most unique. Such a funny little dog.
