Sooo, I posted about poor Layla's problem with getting poop caught in her butt fur. I got her a nice trim in the butt area, and that has helped a lot with the problem, but the more I've paid attention to it, the more I realize that her soft stools are the real problem. I gave her a bath tonight, and she still had chunks of poop stuck around her butt. Icky. I know this can be because of food. It's about time to buy a new bag anyway. I have been feeding them Taste of the Wild - the Wild Fowl flavor. They both like it, but they both eat out of each other's bowls so if I'm going to change Layla's food I've got to change it for both.
Anyway, I'm trying to find out if anyone can recommend a food that may help to firm up her poop? Or other methods of firming we should try? I appreciate it.

Have you tried adding a little pumpkin to her food? I've heard that can help...
Canned pumpkin did wonders when Steve had soft stool. I gave him 1 spoon's worth once a day for couple days and it was back to normal. I think yams have the same effect. Good luck!
Do you use canned Libbys 100% pumpkin?
Yup, that's the one. have you tried it?
I have not tried it, but if I need it, now I know what to use. Thank You.
I always mix in white rice with Lola's food when she has loose stool. About half food and half rice. She loves it
A home remedy for dogs to have firmer poop is to feed them little bits of mango. It is perfectly safe, and might help save on money.
Or the canned pumpkin! *nods* Both are good.
Okay. We went ahead and bought a small bag of California Natural puppy food - I've heard good things about this brand, and we thought maybe switching to a diet with some grain in it might help. We'll try pumpkin and/or rice if just the food isn't enough! Thanks guys!
So canned pumpkin is the secret trick! I've got to try that one. I'm sure she'll love it--she loves everything except her food.
You might want to try a high protein, grain-free food. I like Merrick Before Grain, I feed Banjo the buffalo or salmon. Also, Grandma Lucy's Simple Remedy is a chicken and white rice formula that you just and hot water to. It's great for little bouts of runny poop, and easy for little pups to digest. Hope this helps!
I actually think the fact that we were feeding grain-free (Taste of the Wild) was contributing to Layla's problem. We've been using the California Natural for 3 meals now and I noticed immediate improvement. Which makes sense, given that one of the remedies for runny poo is to put rice in with their food...so giving them a food with rice in it should theoretically also help, right? The store owner where I buy their food suggested the California Natural, saying she thought maybe the grain-free food was just too rich for little Layla's belly. Anyway this seems to be working so far!
