Help for Charlie
Can anyone give me any advise on Charlie's skin problems. He scratches constantly, and has allergies. I gave him a bath in vet prescription shampoo last sat. and he is even worse. He is fed natural balance dog food, grain free allergy formula. He doesn't seem to want to walk in the grass so I am beginning to wonder if he can be allergic to grass? He is also shedding buckets of hair. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks.

I wish I could help, but Lily is having no problems like this. However, my grandmother had a Shih-Tzu that was highly allergic to plastic. For a long time they thought it was just seasonal allergies like we get, but finally it was discovered that something in her bowls, collar clip, and toys were causing the hot spots and redness. Perhaps it is something like that? I wish I could help more, I know it is hard not knowing what is wrong with our fur-babies! (((Hugs)))

Where does he scratch? When did he start? What kind of allergies have been confirmed so far? How often do you bath him? What was the Rx shampoo for? The more info you give us may help us narrow down some possibilities for ya.

thanks for replying. He scratches and bites his hind legs and stomach area. He also will go round and round on his bum like his little nubby tail itches. The shampoo is ketachlor. The scratching seems to be seasonal - as in mostly summer and he has had these seasonal problems for 2 - 3 years. The allergy formula dog food helped with the stomach problems he used to have but not the skin problems. He also licks the bottom of his paws.

thanks James - he gets benadryl - that was the only thing my vet recomended other than the medicated baths.

Hmm, my pup is a habitual butt-chewer too, and benadryl seemed to help along with an allergy test. I cut the chicken he was allergic too and now he is starting back up with the butt-biting!! He leaves his paws alone at least. I have been e-collaring him routinely when he gets into one of those fits.

It sounds like both our babies have similar problems. I have been looking for years for a good natural solution - so far little if anything has helped. I feel bad for him. He is a great dog in the winter and a crazy, miserable snuffle butt in the summer. I haven't gone the e collar yet.

The e-collar helps stop his obsession with chewing, but if the allergies are still acting up it will do nothing but prevent him from chewing. I heard someone say "Emu Oil", some dog product that is essentially vitamin E and its for external use. I may try that, the one thing I have not done is switch his Shampoo/Conditioner. It really irks me when he gets ferociously chewing or I can hear him doing it at night snuffling his nose to breath between chew sessions.

Several of ours are butt chewers. And it turned out to be a combination of fleas and allergies. First thing we did was switch to a natural food. We use Natural Balance Ultra-Premium. It has duck, fish and lamb as a base, no wheat or corn, etc. That made a tremendous difference in the itching and hair loss. Second, we switched to all natural flea control. You can probably Google "Flea-Be-Gone" and find the formula. If not, send a message to CorgiMom, my partner. She has all the recipes. That's been a wonderful addition. All of the kids aren't having anywhere near the problems as before. We can use it as a drop, like Frontline, a spray or in their oatmeal shampoo. It has helped tremendously! We still have one dog who likes to chew, but most of his issue (it's Rudy) seems to come from stress.
Good luck. There's holistic, natural help out there. You just have to find it.

Sounds like fiea allergies. Is the hair lose off his butt/hips and is his skin flaking like psorisis? If so, Besides all of the good advise listed above use a flea comb to get all of the little flakes off of her skin. The flakes are what spread the allergy

Where do you live. Rusty is also very allergic, to something not sure what, seems lately it is to everything. I'm going to change his food and see if that helps. We live in Florida and lately Rusty does not want to step on the grass if it is wet. Bathed him this morning in Oatmeal shampoo with tea tree oil. GOOD for right now.
All of the commercial flea products have come up loosers. In fact it seems to hurt.

We're Florida too, and Cheez refuses to step on the wet grass as well.
I use a oatmeal flea shampoo / cond. to bath him. He is on Advantage and I mist him with a garlic-based flea repellant before going out. I also check him for fleas often and there usually isnt even a bit of flea-dirt. Occasionally I may find one little hitch-hiker. He is on the natural food too. His favorite thing is butt-chewing it seems, but he squeels when he cant scratch it like it's really bothering him.
