Anyone know much about the blue corgi gene? Ein's a bluie and he's so much softer than any other corgi I've ever met and it's not puppy coat. He was even softer when he was a baby. I'm curious to know if coat texture is related to coat color on a genetic level. In other words, is he soft just because he's soft, or is he soft because he's blue? (PS bonus points if you happen to have ever seen a breeder who has had a blue corgi and can give me contact info so that our next corgi can be another bluie. I don't care what the AKC says about it. I like my bluie.)

Hmmm...That's interesting. I'm not exactly sure if coat color is related to coat texture. I have always thought that my tortoiseshell animals (Two cats and a guinea pig) are softer than others of their species or even breed. But it could just be a coincidence.
Hi,
When you say blue coloured coated Corgi, do you mean like blue merle? Some Cardigan Welsh Corgis are that colour. Not common, though. Never seen one of that colour in Singapore.
He's a "blue" Pembroke. He's more of a charcoal grey than black and his eyes are grey instead of brown. Here are a few pics now that I am on my home PC. Most are puppy pics because the blue was more evident when he was a pup. Also including him with my brother's black lab/shepherd mix and with GregZaffuto's pem, Nick, so you can see his color next to a normal black dog.

PS, I swear we weren't choking him in that pic with my brother's dog. Hawk is very rambunctious (read: my brother has decided that he likes Hawk "wild" and has encouraged him to be that way) and Ein was only 5 months old, so I kept him on a short leash just in case Hawk was too much for him. Even then, Ein was a stubborn boy. We use a harness when we go for walks because he'll choke himself pulling against the leash.
Here one can read about Pembroke colors:

and here about Pembroke "bluies" in particular:

As you say, "bluies" are not acknowledged by the AKC (or in Europe), but they of course make excellent pets like all other corgis. And your "bluie" is beautiful.

It's in English and there are pictures as well.

By the way, I don't think that coat texture is related to coat color at all.

Above: A blue Cardigan puppy (blue merle).
Cardigans come in many colors; Tricoloured, brindle pointed, red, sable, brindle of different shades and blue merle.

And blue Cardigans - blue merle - are acknowledged by both the AKC and the European kennel clubs (and in the rest of the world as well). In Sweden they are bred by quite a few breeders nowadays, so they are more usual than just a few years ago.

Fromax kennel will also breed blue merles when our young bitch Holly (brindle pointed tricolour) is old enough to be mated to a blue merle dog. This will hopefully result in blue merle and tricolour puppies in about a year from now on.

The blue puppy I showed above is Holly's sister Hilla. And here is a picture of blue Hilla and our Holly when they were puppies a year and a half ago:

the photo is adorable! what a couple cuties.
There is a breeder near where I live that sometimes has bluies: Canyon's AKC

DISCLAIMER: I don't know anything about this breeder. Be sure to do some investigating on your own!.
My blue merle came from Greensboro, N. Carolina. Pumpkin is so soft she feels like a kitty cat instead of a dog. Other non merles I've met are not as soft. My breeder is Robin Honeycutt. Faeriesteed .com Blue merles are recognized by the AKC, and don't we love the eyes!
My blue merle is much softer and we get comments on it, never thought of it being due to the color of the coat. Interesting. but yes, Tova is super soft and was extremly softer as a pup.
We have Blizzard a 4 year old Fawn colored bluie. His coat is beautiful and longer than our other corgis' and softer also. We wouldn't trade him for the world!
I think it might be the color. When you think about it, different colored parts on dog coats are different feeling from others. On all my corgis (red and white), their white parts are a lot more softer than their red parts. My sister has a blue/cream borzoi and his blue spots feel a bit courser compared to his white coat and light brown spots.

You're blue pemmie is adorable! I love the blue color. :-)
