I was out today and somebody said that I shouldn't be giving my eight week old any treats - is this true? When do you introduce them and are chewing bones... also a no no????
You should be able to give your pup some treats. Treats should be no more than 10% of the total diet (puppies or adults). I boil skinned chicken thighs, dice them fine, and freeze in small packets for some of Charlie's treats. Bits of raw fruits (no grapes) and veggies (no onion) are great. A little peanut butter now and then. I had a hard time finding manufactured, packaged dog treats that didn't have a lot of sugar and other junk in them, but given in moderation they should also be ok.
Raw meaty bones may be too rich for young puppies. I've never given one to Charlie. Someone else here may be able to help with advice on the bones (and other treat ideas).

Not only is the content of the treat important but the timing of and where you are when you give them. Treats are a great way to entice and help train your pup. Lots of pups need help coming when you call them. What a great opportunity to use a treat! Can be useful for learning to walk on lead. You will be amazed at how quickly they can learn the site command by just raising the treat up and back a bit.
Dont ever feed from places you do not want to create a begging habit. Doesnt take a corgi long to learn where food comes from and you can bet all eyes will be on you if they expect a treat. Teething is a great time to offer a kong toy frozen with a bit of kibble and plain yogurt. A recipe for Frosty Paws can be found on line. This is another great treat. Plenty of recipes for homemade dog cookies can also be found. This is a great way to know the your treats are fresh and exactly what they contain.
