Pembrokes versus Cardigans
I don't have a Corgi of my own yet, but plan to get one this summer. I've done a lot of research, read a lot of articles, as well as many discussions on various online forums and blogs, but one thing that I have hard time finding good information about is a good list of similarities and differences between the two Corgi breeds.
From what I've read, the differences I found so far are as follows:
- Cardis are slightly bigger (taller/longer) than Pems
- Cardis always have a tail while Pems maybe be born with a natural bob-tail or have it docked at a young age
- Cardis also have larger, rounder ears than Pems
- Pems come in red/white, sable, or tri colors, Cardis come in all of those, plus various brindle and merle variations
- Cardis are generally said to be more calm, while Pems are knows for their hyperness
If you have anything to add onto this list or to correct it, please do reply. I'd love to hear thoughts on personality differences especially since that's not as obvious as the different looks.

I've also read that Cardigans tend to me more reserved when meeting strangers.

That is different in different individuals. Our Cardigan Frodo is not a bit reserved to strangers. He just loves everybody. His daughter Tina is more reserved to strangers, especially strange men. That might depend on a bad experience she has had as a puppy, though...

Both of my corgis are very friendly to both other people and other animals. I have both a party corgi, Boo, and a "reseved" corgi, Diva. "Reserved" in this case just means that she does not typically initiate the barking! Diva loves company - she just does not like them sitting on her throne. She will typically sit in front of them and stare up at them until they get up at which time she proptly jumps on the sofa to take her proper place.
I am complely unsure about this "reseved" reputation but have never been around pems so maybe by when compaired to pems they are. If pems are more outgoing than my two they must be like corgis gone wild all of the time.

I agree with you, Michelle! All our Cardigan Corgis are friendly towards other people and animals (we have cats as well). Some - like our Frodo - are a bit more outgoing than other Cardigans (clowns).
I know some Pems as well, and I like them too (they are cute). But I don´t think that they are more "outgoing" than our Frodo. No dog can be without going completely "wild"...

While i love my cardi's one of the best compliments that can be paid to both the cardi and pem is that corgis as a whole are adaptable. My two cardis know that they own their own home they are happy to share with most anyone and other animals as well. So far the most uncompromising thing that my boo has to deal with is me talking on the phone - i believe it is because he feels that the people on the on the other end are not here in person to bask in his glory. I have ofter heard cardis remarked as "clownish" and i believe that there is some truth to that- they tend to have a bit of character about them.

Some Cardigans - not all of them - are real clowns. Our Frodo is one of them.
We have 5 Cardigans, and Frodo - the oldest (5 years) - can play all day with all of them. He tires them out one at a time.

Other Cardigans are more dignified - like i.e. our alpha-bith Saga, but she plays with Frodo from time to time. And guess who was the happiest Cardigan in Sweden when we had 6 other Cardigans visiting us the other day?

Cardigans can be good friends and play together - even if they meet för the first time.

i have had both but lean more toward pems. i love them both and am hoping to get another cardi again...mine died 4 years ago. but he was awsome. he was black and white (that is another color option) he was more relaxed but he loved to go for an outing whenever he was able to. they are both great to have. it also depends where u live and what u are going to do with them

Thank you both - Jenny and Corgilove! And I hope you will find a Corgi that suits you, Corgilove.
The picture below is of three generations in Sweden: Frodo's mother Vicky, Frodo and Frodo´s daughter Tina (when she was a puppy).
And here there are four generations in Finland. Our Tina, her sister Fizzie, their great grandmother (Tuuma), their grandmother (Kata) and their mother ("Oodi").
It's nice to be able to know ones dogs for many generations back. So I hope that the breeder you find will be a good one - and that you get to meet the parents of your puppy. The main thing is to find a good breeder - whether you choose a Pembroke or a Cardigan...

I didn't read your post before putting up mine. You are so right. Especially the treat part. Pan (Pem) follows anyone with treats, but Trunks (Cardi) won't take a treat from anyone but a family member.

I adore both of my babies. I think that both breeds bring a special attitude to our household.
Trunks (Cardi) is very protective and is a tad of a worrywart. He is also a tad velcro.
Pan (Pem) is independent and loving. She loves to snuggle on her demand. She is a little bossy.
I love both breeds and I think that having one of each brings together the best of both worlds.
Trunks gives the best kisses though. (see my Trunks Dancing video)
