I am going to board Molly and Tig over Christmas. There is a reputable doggy day care near me that came recommended by a co-worker. I've called them and they have space for my two. My only concern is that the only play time they have is group play time by size. They wanted to put them in with the little dogs. I told them they may be short, but they are big attitude dogs and get along better with bigger dogs. I am really concerned about group play because mine don't really get along well with other dogs- ESP. Tigger and ESP. little, barky dogs. My concern is that there could/would be blood shed and my dogs would be doing the harm. I don't want to put anyone's dog in danger!

I need to board them. I don't want them to be miserable, but do I tell them that I just don't want them to have any activity time?

Hi Katie, it will be in your best interest to go see the facility for yourself first, play time is very important and I will not want my dogs to have none at all. Pet day care usually offer a trial day as well, make sure all their shots requirement are met, if there is a slight doubt in your mind, it's not too late to look for another facility. You can also ask our members here for a referral in your area.
If the place you're looking to board your dogs won't listen to your concerns about your dogs and are unwilling to accommodate your wishes even when part of your concern is the safety of the other dogs, then it sounds like this place isn't so reputable. The other dogs will probably be fine. If it's a reputable place, then they should have someone watching the dogs when they play at all times, which means they should be able to break up any fights. I would guess that your two will end up just sticking together during that time and ignoring the other dogs. At least they'll have each other. You can try calling around to other places in your area to see if they'd be willing to let Molly and Tigger play with the bigger dogs, or just give them some play time by themselves.
Hey Katie......I've boarded my dogs a couple of times at different kennels and, each time the boarder would do an appraisal of my dogs temperament before they were allowed to interact with other dogs. If the boarded didn't feel the dogs would do well in group play, then I would have to pay extra for individual play time. It seems if the place is a reputable boarder, they should be testing all dogs behavior to make sure they they don't pose a danger to other dogs or themselves. Most kennels also have the option for individual play time at an extra charge. If you don't feel comfortable with this place, do some more research and look for other places in your area.

It just so happens they felt my dogs would do best if they played with the big dogs so I know what you mean!
If this is your first time boarding your dogs, just to let you know, your dogs might behave differently when they are boarded. I can't take my dog to dog park... she only gets along with certain dogs, and usually, she ends up sitting next to us the whole time we are there.

When we go out of town without her though, we leave her at reputable kennel with play time. When we come back, this kennel gives us a "report card". She has stayed there several times, and she gets "got along with other dogs just fine", and makes "best friends". What the heck? We usually call during her stay, and they always say that she plays with others fine. What??

I was told by different people that dogs sometimes behave very differently when they are with their owners. They get protective of you & jealous of other dogs.

So, if you have time, it might be a good idea to try your kennel for 1-nighter or just as "day care", so you'll know how your dogs will behave in a play group without your presence.

Hope you & your doggies enjoy the holidays! Good luck!
Hi everyone! Thanks for talking me off the ledge. I really appreciate your advice and I will be asking all those questions and being very honest with them when I visit today. I am taking Molly and Tig to check the place out, to be safe I am going to bring them in one at a time. I think it is a great suggestion to do a trial run, I am going to ask them about that. And I will ask about individual play time as an option as well. I will keep you updated.
My vet just recommended another boarding facility for me to check out. Invididual play time! Yay! Now I have 2 places to check out!
Hey everyone! thanks for your help. I've found the right boarding place- it was the place recommended by my vet. They have play time by family groups so Tigger and Molly would have their own play time.
Take them for a "test". Speak to the Doggy Day Care personnel and see if you can bring Molly and Tigger over for a couple of hours to see how they do. When I take Nala to the dog park she realizes very quickly who to play rough with and who to leave alone. They usually know. If not, the other dog will let them know with a quick growl, or just ignoring them.

I always take Nala and Cosmo, to the small area at the dog park. They do very well. Try to take them to a dog park if you can, or if not, again, try with the Day Care for a couple of tests. This will help them to know one or two dogs that go regularly and feel more comfortable. Good luck.
From what I can tell, the corgis survived boarding school. I dropped them off with premeasured food and their blankets. They had an indoor/outdoor suite with their own playtime. My sister picked them up for me because they were closing before I landed. My sister agreed that it was a nice place, very clean and well run. They came back very exhausted from what I can tell...and a little chubbier through the middle!?!?!?!? I don't know how that happened but it looks like we are all going to be doing weight watchers together!
Glad to hear that it went well :)
I have boarded Muffin three times very reluctantly because there was no other choice. My Day Care and kennell had to do a behavior test on Muff before she could stay . I had to leave her for four hours while they tested her. Did your day care do that? If they did, and Molly and Tig passed, they will be fine.
