Hi,

We noticed Joey wanted to SPIN on his BUTT. We thought it was cute initially but later realized his anal gland needs to be expressed. We did it once. But last night noticed he was uncomfortable again. This was 6 weeks later. We tried to take him to the ER but they had bigger problems. Anyone have a regular issue with this and know what causes it?

My guy had problems with this when he was a younger pup. He had to have his anal glands expressed 3-4 times before he stopped "scooting" on the ground. He also had a case of worms at the same time, which may have contributed to some of his discomfort. I would suggest getting them expressed again and making sure there are no intestinal parasites.
I was told that the anal glands should empty automatically by having bowel movements that are good and solid. If the stool is too soft issues with the gland can arise. Try giving him more fiber and see if that helps.
You need to make a reg. vet appointment and have them done. The vet can actually express them from the inside and not just by squeezing them from the outside. So start with that, if the anal glands become a continual problem you CAN have them removed.
Are you suppose to do this often or only when there is a problem? I've never even thought of doing this for Grover!
usually only when there is a problem. If you want to have them expressed you can at any time.
I would have a stool culture done as well. Intestinal parasites can cause this. Get him on a diet that creates good bowel movements and make sure you allow him to relieve himself frequently.
