I just ordered a year's supply of Interceptor online from Pet Care Rx for a pretty good discounted price and apparently my vet won't fill a prescription for any online pet meds because they can't be sure of where the medication is coming from. The receptionist said bad things have happened but wasn't specific. Has anyone heard of this-- or is my vet just trying to get me to pay full price? I would think a big company has a reputation for selling quality items and if the medication is a brand name-- why would this be a problem?

The online pet rx companies do not get their product directly from the pharmaceutical companies, and often get leftovers from other sources - including out of the country. That's why they can survive as companies and offer these discounts. Please take my advice and get your prescription drugs from your vet. They will guarantee (as will the pharma company) and vets and their staff will also educate and treat your pets more effectively since they know exactly what prescriptions and non prescriptions meds you are giving your pet. There have been documented cases of expired drugs and placebo drugs being sold thru these pharmacies. Drug companies like Novartis, Pfizer and Merial will be happy to fill you in on the problems.

Did you hear about the several Argentinian polo ponies that died en masse a couple of months ago in FL? This happened because they were given a compounded product that is not allowed in the U.S. The local pharmacist mixed incorrectly and the horses died a sudden death. I'm not saying online rx drugs will kill your pet, but they are not regulated and there are NO guarantees.

Finally, my suggestion is to ask your vet for a discounted price or payment plan if you can't afford. They don't make a huge profit off these drugs, but will likely work with you to offer incentives in co-op with the pharmaceutical company, or perhaps volume discounts.
I have also heard that if you order your prescriptions online that you dont know what you are getting and could be expired!
I wouldn't take any chances.
lawsuits, that's the bottom line, because your vet needs to "authorize" the rx and if anything happens, he will be liable. However, there are vets like mine that will work with you and beat the online price and will even ship it to your door.
I order Dax's Sentinel online, but after reading this I may not anymore! My original vet told me that they did not work with online pharmacies, so it's not just you. Some will and some won't. I found a one that would, but I may just go back to buying them straight from the vet if there's so many problems with online pharmacies. I certainly don't want to risk Dax's health just to save a few extra dollars. But to answer your question, no, it's not just that vet, you're not alone.
