Corgi teeth issues????

I was wondering if anyone else had any issues with there dogs teeth? My Butterball has horrible teeth. We took him to the vet and he said it was a genetic defect and that there is nothing that can be done. He is only 1 1/2 and his teeth look really bad. I have a doggy tooth brush and we brush often, but they still seem to be getting worse. The vet says the enamel on his teeth is bad and that is causing the brown spots and decay on his teeth. Anyone else have this?

Just like people some dogs have far more issues with their teeth then others. I think calling it a "genetic defect" probably was not the right term unless he has an incorrect bite or malformed jaw. Keep brushing. Marrow bones sometimes do help but then you also risk broken teeth and some dogs do get quite the loose stool with them. Good luck!

Dee Dee has horrible teeth too. No matter how much you brush, or how much rawhide you give, it doesn't matter. We noticed that her teeth weren't doing well when she was about 2 yrs old. We did professional cleaning, but nothing really worked. When she was about 4, she had a major issue, and we ended up getting referred to animal teeth specialist. Yes, there is a such thing as animal dentist! Anyway, she had to have root canal done. She is almost 9 yrs old now, but she hasn't had any major issue other than brown, stained teeth & bad breath. My suggestion is to keep on brushing, and start saving some money in case you have to have some serious procedure done, like root canal. Even back then (5 yrs ago), root canal cost us about $500 (cost us about $100 before we got to the animal dentist sicne regular vet thought it might be just simple cavity).

Like Sam said, it's just like people. Some have really good teeth, and all they need is rawhide, not even brushing occasionally. Your dog & my dog just happened to have bad teeth! Start saving now, and you should be ok. Good luck! :)
