hi everyone, i was wondering if any one here skijores, or Roller blades with their corgi? Kirby lobes to rung, and i cant keep up most of the time. and i thought maybe skiing rollerblading with him might be good exercise. any thoughts? i am mostly concerned about preventing injuries and whether it is an acceptable form of exercise. my boy is a bit long in the back, but i would be getting him a harness.

I rollerblade with Franklin. I just make sure not to push him too hard. We usually only do about 2-3 miles and he often stops to sniff or eat grass, that's just his way of saying he needs a break. He has an exercise intolerance condition which doesn't allow him to go very far/fast, but in this cold weather going at a relatively slow/moderate pace he does really well. I have taken him on leash a few times, but where I live its easier and better for him to let him off leash so he can stop when he wants.

Yep, I too rollerblade with ours, they like it and know to stay out of the way of my sometimes ungraceful movements. I've thought of ski joring too, but no funds to buy the equipment. It would be lots of fun here.

Hi Amberlie, I am planning to try skijors this winter, will let you know how it goes :)

I'm skeptical of mixing wheels with leashes.  Off-leash might work.  My dogs keep up with me on foot, even with off-leash sniffing pauses, but a human on wheels?  Dunno.

I would recommend against rollerblading with your pup. Corgis are such turds about making sudden turns or switching sides on which they're walking, that you could get tangled in the leash and fall or it would jerk his neck too hard, or worse, run over him. 2nd is that it's too easy for you to trip and fall; once the wheels get rolling and your dog keeps running, it gets difficult to stop with all the momentum. I learned this the hard way and my butt was bruised for weeks (with my dog when I was growing up). So either your butt or your hands and knees will suffer.

I agree before you attempt this you need to make sure you are good at rollerblading and that your dog is good at staying out of the way! Luckily Franklin was pretty fearful of my rollerblades from the beginning so stays a healthy distance away from them, but he has gained confidence and a few days ago stopped suddenly RIGHT in front of me, it resulted in some pretty awkward maneuvering but nobody was hurt luckily! And this is off leash! Its a bit scarier when I take him on a leash, I've only done that once and went REALLY slow.

I hope you are a confident roller blader!  I wouldn't describe myself as awkward by any means.  I can ice skate fairly well (well enough to be asked to play college intermural hockey) and a black diamond skiier (skiied since I was 5)... but I took a bad fall and hit my knee from the side while roller blading with my lab/border collie, not my corgi Pazu.  No, I didn't get tangled in the leash.  So even with protection, I hit my knee from the side and now I have a fractured knee and will have to nurse it for the next few weeks.  Fortunately it's a stable fracture - no surgery required.  I think it still can be done - Cesar Millan blades with his dogs at much faster paces.  I would suggest moving really slowly if you want to try it on leash and find good (smooth) places to blade.

I will definitely try skijoring.  It seems a lot safer on snow than pavement.
