It depends on the age and size of your dog, and what your purpose is. If you have a 8 week old pup that you are house breaking, then really small. As he grows you will need to get larger crates, but don't start out with a large one because that will foil your housebreaking attempts. Maybe a little more info?

At Petco (i thiink...maybe Petsmart) I found one for my son's Golden retriever that has turned out to be ideal for Ruby the corgi, now that the retriever is grown. It's a large wire crate, and it has a wire divider (same stuff as the sides and top) that you can secure crosswise anywhere along the length of the thing. So you can make it cozy for a little puppy and then you can enlarge it once or twice and finally give the pup the whole space. Ruby likes the crate and sometimes will go in there for a nap on her own, without any urging. Only problem is, it's kinda large...not the sort of thing you'd like to have gracing the living room.
