Okay, this happened to my son's golden retriever, but some research on the Web suggests it's not as uncommon as one might think and is not restricted to any one breed. And since Charley was basically…Continue

Doggy Car Phobia?

Okay, this happened to my son's golden retriever, but some research on the Web suggests it's not as uncommon as one might think and is not restricted to any one breed. And since Charley was basically brought up by Cassie the Corgi, who was his substitute mother for his first year of puppyhood -- and because Cassie shows some signs of a similar neurosis -- I wonder.Charley the Golden Retriever has never been fond of riding in cars, but after my son bought a new Ford Escape he became downright…See More

About My Corgi(s):
Having a friend with a Cardigan corgi led me to admire these fine little dogs -- but for some reason (unknown to me) I decided I wanted a Pembroke. By a fluke I came across Cassie at the local Humane Society -- raced up there and nabbed her away from the other EIGHT people who wanted her. Have had many dogs over the years, mostly large, mostly German shepherds. Just love this marvelous, funny, good-hearted, bossy little herder. Hope to receive a new Pembroke pup early in 2014: mom, in a nearby town, is expecting now.

In Which Cassie Saves Ruby's Life...

Posted on August 5, 2016 at 4:30pm 5 Comments

Welp, I have to admit it: I seriously did not think a corgi could rise to the level of a German shepherd, the dogs of my dreams (okay, okay: and nightmares). But by golly: Cassie the Corgi just did it.

After the Adventures in Medical Science (that would be 6 surgeries in 12 months), I fell into a kind of lassitude in which I let everything, business and personal, go to pot. But lately a small recovery has occurred.

Yesterday I happened to notice that I haven't cleaned…

Cassie is TEN years old!

Posted on July 22, 2016 at 10:13pm 2 Comments

You'd never know it.

This afternoon while scanning through some old blog posts by way of gathering stuff for a blog-based bookoid, I came across a post dated June 14, 2008, announcing the arrival of Cassie the Corgi at the Funny Farm. In it, I remarked that the Humane Society said her former humans told them she was two years old.

That would make her ten years old now!

Who would think…

...DOG HAIR.

Quite a lot of dog hair. :-D

So does your human.

It's been past time for Cassie and Ruby's doggy baths for quite awhile. I try to put off bathing them until the weather is warm, because I'm afraid of getting them chilled. Ruby has normal fur, but Cassie's hair is like a lion's mane, only all over her body. It's so thick and lush that it takes all day long to get dry, even in Arizona's parched climate.

Today the…

How to Avoid Dog Bites

Posted on June 29, 2016 at 12:41pm 6 Comments

Dogs bite: some 4.7 million times a year, leading 800,000 humans to seek medical attention, of whom 386,000 will need emergency treatment. A third of all homeowner’s liability claims result from dog bites, at an average cost per claim of $32,072. Every year, the insurance industry shells out over a billion dollars for dog-bite claims.

My son, a claims adjuster for a major US insurance company,…

hi Vicky. just now seen u commented on my page about the raw feeding so i do apologize for not responding but u have given me great info on raw feeding and i am still thinking about it. i mean i may spend more on my trip to the grocery store at the 1st of the month but at least then i can make little baggies, freeze them, and for each meal time microwave them and know exactly what hes eating. i know the poor the guy gets sick of eating kibble all the time so i put wet food in it also sometimes but boy does it get so expensive. its good to know i can throw it all in the slow cooker too. that will save a lot of time

Vicky, I'm glad you have an all clear!!!!!!!!  That is great but I know it was a serious business to consider.  It sounds as if your recovery will go well and then you can deal with doggie business more easily.  Good luck.

Vicky,

I'm happy the surgery went so well and hate that Cassie is acting out.  After you get rid of the drains and are able to move better, they will hopefully see that things are more normal and hopefully they (Cassie particularly) will settle down.

Did you have chemotherapy previously?  Before you said that things were looking positive so I assumed that you had had some type of treatment.  I am very glad things are looking good for you.
