I got this information from the Pembroke L yahoo group and just am passing it along.
Cross post far and wide!!!!!

I would like to warn all dog lovers out there to be very careful about the
dog treats that you give your dogs. Last week I bought a 'Real Ham Bone'
made by Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri from Walmart. Here is
what it looks like: . The label says it is made with '100% Food Grade
Ingredients' and it isn't made from China. I thought that meant that this
would make a good treat for my dogs. Boy was I wrong.

Trace, my dog, enjoyed chewing on this bone. It did not splinter or
anything, in fact there is quite a large piece of it still left. Then in the
evening she started vomiting. She spent the next day at a veterinarian' s
office where she was diagnosed with a blockage of the
colon. That night she endured a 4 hour surgery at Brandon Veterinary
Specialists where the vet picked out small round pellets of the bone, up to
the size of about a b-b. The next morning she was moved to Florida
Veterinary Specialist critical care unit. Again in the evening she had
another 2 hour surgery, because the blockage had caused poison in her body.
She passed away at 4:30 the next afternoon.

Everyone who hears this horrible story immediately says 'Well that sounds
like a lawsuit to me'. That is what I thought also. Since then, I have
learned that is not that easy to sue on behalf of a dog. The lawyers say a
dog is a possession just like a couch. So, so far, all I have been able to
do is write a certified letter to Dynamic Pet
Products of Missouri. In it I requested my vet bills to be paid and their
product to be relabeled or preferably removed from the shelf. I don't know
if I will get a response. If anyone else has any ideas about how I may
address this issue, please let me know at

> com.

In the memory of Trace, please pass this email on to all of the dog lovers
that you know. This type of bone is sold in all of the stores under several
different manufacturers names. I would assume they all may do the same
thing. Even if they don't splinter, they can cause a
blockage.

It is sad indeed, however, any type of chews should be supervise, the post did not mention what the substance was and how it caused poison in her body, I am sympathetic in this situation, but one should not take things at its face value and jump into conclusion based on emotions without further investigation.
Your absolutely correct but is a good reminder to be careful w/anything you offer your dog.
I bought that same bone for my dog as a treat once before... thank god she didnt get a chance to eat it... (I gave it to her and she took to her crate and left it there for later... by the time she came back to it her whole crate was covered in ants) sorry about Trace.
How HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I was going to look more into this today but things have come up so thank you for coming to the rescue.

A Corgi friend of mine said she had bought the bone for her 2 Corgis and will never again give it to them. They got very sick but are okay.
I think that the dog was probably "poisoned" by a perforated bowel from the blockage that probably could have been corrected in the initial surgery. But I'm not a vet. Like Silvia, I agree that all chews should be supervised and while I don't by real bone chews, I will reserve judgement until I see more on this subject.
Definitely do NOT buy these bones for your dogs. I bought them for my corgis for Christmas and my male literally ate the entire bone in one night. I didn't really realize that he had eaten the entire bone until he started throwing up all over the house. He threw up little bitty pieces of that bone. That is when I went on the mission to find the bone and could only find the females bone that she was guarding from him. These bones are just too soft for a dog. They do not splitter but a small dog can eat one in about 2 hours.
I do still give them real bones but I stick to beef femurs now. They will chew on one beef femur forever. I eventually pick it up and throw it away and give them a new one.
That is scary. I checked my Walmart for the bone and it wasn't there and I live in Missouri.
How horrible that this person just wanted a treat for their dog and it ended up killing the poor thing. I LOVE buying treats for my dog, but I always research new products on the internet and see what people have said about them before I buy them -- this is exactly why. They should definitely remove this product from the shelves, though it's horrible that this is the way they had to find it to be unsafe.
