Hi everyone,

I'm Heidi, and my 9 month old Corgi is Foxie. I've had her for almost 2 months. She is very energetic and good-natured to everyone with the exception of my cat, Garfield. Initially Foxie was very scared of him, and wouldn't even look at him but just whimper. Garfield the cat wasn't welcoming and kind of creeped around her for a little while. He's not that interested in her anymore, except if she's blocking his was to the courtyard where he likes to sit.  I got her a baby gate (in addition to her crate) so she could relax at bedtime. Her crate is also right outside my room and we are so close that she can see me.

Now Foxie gets in Garfield's face barking at him and continually advances until he jumps up high onto the furniture. This happens daily. So far they have not bitten each other, but Foxie corners him and barks at him and Garfield has let her know in no uncertain terms that he does not like it. He hisses and swings at her, although he is declawed. I do my best to keep them apart. The cat is 7 yrs old and male and just basically wants to sleep and eat now. Foxie physically blocks him from entering or exiting the house to get to the courtyard where he likes to sit.

Does anyone have any suggestions?? The trainer at the puppy training class said to treat each of them when the other entered the room so teach would associate the other with good things. It wasn't effective. My friend's trainer said to use a water spray bottle on them when they go at it. I haven't tried the water yet, but I will.

I would appreciate any input, especially if you have had a similar experience! Thank you!

How are things going with Foxie and Garfield? I have been watching this discussion closely. I went and met an 8 month old pem today. I'm torn between getting her or waiting for a younger pup. I'm concerned how she will be with my cat.

Just when I think we've had a good day, we are back to square one. I've been careful not to let them outside in the courtyard at the same time. I keep Foxie behind a gate whenever I'm gone or too busy to be right there, and I've done the water squirt bottle, rewards for not reacting to the cat when he walks by, and so on. I thought we had such a great day today (even took her to the dog park to run), but when I turned my back literally for a couple of seconds to put dog food in her bowl, she went after the cat. So far the cat has not been injured, thank god. I am coming to the conclusion that Foxie simply should not be around cats. Period. Otherwise, she's really a great dog.

Marcie- I'm sure no Cesar Milan- but based on my experience with this situation, I would imaging a young puppy would be a better bet as far as adjusting to having a cat in the home. Hopefully the cat will accept the puppy as well. Good luck!

I just emailed the pup's breeder asking for a trial period. Mokey is 2, fairly rowdy, very opinionated and not declawed. She doesn't hesitate to bite me when I tick her off so it is possible that aggression could go both ways. She was in love with Kramer, who had a healthy respect for cats. She has slapped my mother's dog a few times, it was always deserved. I might just be overthinking, but I want to be prepared. If the breeder won't agree to a trial period, then I'll feel better waiting.

I've been trying to keep up with this discussion because we have problems here with cat vs dog too, but our problems are the opposite. We have an older cat who showed up as a stray years ago, had been living on her own and is quite capable of defending herself. Up until now, we've had no problems with introducing dogs to her--even the Newfie yielded to her immediately. We have another cat, much younger, who showed up as a stray, is almost twice her size and he yields to her as well. Suddenly when Brodie showed up, she went crazy on him. I can't figure out why, but she hates him to the point that she literally pounces on his head and attacks him. She has been banished from the upstairs for the moment by my husband because when he tried to intervene, she wet all over him once and attacked him savagely a second time. The other cat is fine with Brodie--they play together. Brodie squeals and yelps like he's been shot when Miss Kitty attacks him and tries to get away, but she pursues him like she's a mountain lion. I've never seen anything like it in all my years of having both cats and dogs!

How are things going with Foxie and Garfield? I've been wondering for a few days.
