I noticed Sydney scratching and licking a certain area on her back a few days ago. Upon further inspection I saw that the area was red and a little oozy. I read up on hot spots and decided that must be what this is. So I put socks on her back feet so she wouldn't scratch, got an E-collar from petsmart, clipped her fur around the area, cleaned it with soap, and applied a hydrocortisone ointment. Is there something I'm missing? The spot is not that large because I think I caught it early. I'm posting to see if there's anything else I can do or if someone else on here has had experiences with hot spots. Syd is looking pathetic with that E-collar :-( Also, does anyone know how long they take to heal?

Thank you so much for the replies! The gold bond really helped and it's already started to look a lot better. I just hope she doesn't get these too often!
Gold Bond works the best on Charlie's hot spots. It depends on how bad the hot spot is as to how long it can take to heal. Charlies have taken anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. (they can do alot of damage very quickly when they are left alone)

Charlie's allergies are seasonal so we are currently in good shape with the cold weather. I am sorry to tell you but once they start with one hot spot they usually continue to have problems. Charlie also gets benadryl when his allergies are really acting up

They can also get secondary skin infections from all the scratching. You really have to watch them and try to figure out what the cause of the problem is and take them to the vet if they don't show improvement.
