Dax is driving me INSANE. He's a great dog, I love him, but he has an issue. He stays out around the house all day, I close the doors to the bedrooms so he has the kitchen, living room, and hallway. He does GREAT, with the exception of me having to make sure there's nothing on the floor/couch that he can get to to rip up (he won't take anything off the table, which I'm thankful for). But that's not his issue. He used to sleep in his crate but lately I've been leaving him out at night. My boyfriend doesn't want him in the bedroom with us, so that isn't an option. He gets the same space he gets during the day, the kitchen, living room, and hallway. EVERY morning I get up and he's pooped on the floor. I don't understand it. He's not out any longer than he was when he was in his crate. I figured it was just because he has more room, so I got up yesterday morning at 3:30 and took him out, he peed, pooped, I went back to bed, got up 2 hours later and he had pooped on the floor again! This morning I got up at 4:00 to take him out, he had already pooped on the floor. I took him out to pee, went back to bed, and when I got up at 6:00 he had pooped on the floor again! I need this to stop! Anyone have any idea why he might be doing this?

Too bad to hear about your BF not wanting animals in the room.
My GF loves having our pups in bed with us, I spent the greater part of my life with two shelties in bed with me at night (one slept with her head on my pillow, the other slept in the crook of my legs). Dogs make the best buddies ever, and they don't get annoyed if you have the TV on while they are trying to sleep.
Try crating him at night, but keeping the crate in the bedroom and covered. Also only crate when it is time for bed, not when you think it time for Dax to go there. If the BF is against even having the crate in the bedroom (weird man) then keep the crate out in the open and open all day for Dax, that way maybe he will get in the habit of sleeping in there whenever it is nap time.

Try a command too. When we adopted our Corona she already knew "Go to Bed" so it was great, Get your Dax to go to his crate willingly, during the day teach him to go in there on command and treat him for it.

Always wait for him to settle before locking up or releasing him from the crate.

Cover his dog bed with one of your old tee shirts so he has your scent to sleep with too. This helped our shrieking ACD puppy relax and go to sleep.
It sounds like if he was just closer to you at night everyone would get a more peaceful night sleep. Tucker doesn't like it when he is containted in one part of the house and we are in another. He is ok when I leave for work - I listen at/peek through the door when I leave or get home sometimes - but when we are there he wants to be near us. I doubt your Bf prefers poop all over the floor to the crate in the bedroom. Maybe you can put the crate right outside the bedroom so he isn't actually in the room but he can see you and feel close to you??
Lol. Believe it or not, I think Dax likes him more than he likes me!
I recommend using vinegar to clean the area. It really seems to get out excrement smell!!
Does he see you clean up the poop? Some dogs get satisfaction/think you want them to do it since you're taking it.

I'd repeat the recommendation of a larger/different type of crate? maybe a canvas one.

I agree I think its seperation anxiety and that's also probably why he doesn't like the crate. I also agree night time = doesn't need a lot of room. Maybe you could gate off a very small area (4'x4') in a corner? might feel small enough not to poop, but not like a crate?
We have doggy beds on the floor on my side of the bed. My dog was around before my husband. He protested at first, but I stood my ground. When we got 2nd dog, he stayed in the crate at night till he was housebroke reliably during the day. The precident was set by then- a second doggy bed by my side. they are very quiet and sleep when they are in the room with us. Also, young dog sometimes forgets to go to the bathroom at "last call". He stands up quietly and touches me with his nose, and we sneak out (dosen't happen often). We have a little secret, too. When daddy goes to work--pop,pop- two corgis on the bed! ; )
