Juno almost home....NERVOUS!

ok. I'm new to dogs & corgis. I'm getting Juno, who's 10wks old on Sat. & I'm beginning to get a tad bit nervous. I know there's been a bunch of these puppy coming home topics and I've tried to read what I've been able to find so I hope this isn't repetitive for those of you who're reading. Here are my questions.

1) I have a 36inch wire crate for him. Here's the prob. I want him to sleep in my room but during the day I'll be out in the living room & so will he & will need his crate. I don't want to have to move the crate back and forth between my the two rooms on a daily basis. WHERE SHOULD HIS CRATE BE & is it ok for him to sleep in the living room since i won't be able to hear him? Some have told me that if I let him sleep in my room, he'll test me & push my buttons. Is that true?

2) He's had his first set of shots(DAP) and i plan to give him his second set(DHPP) the first set I know is missing parainfluenza. Is there something/somewhere I need to keep him away from in order not to catch that before he gets his second set? or missing the P in his first shot not a biggie?

3) What should I leave with him before I leave to work? I know some have said to leave him w/ a toy you trust him with...but how do i know that's the toy since all of them require "supervision"? He won't be left for long just 3hrs max.since i can come back on break & i'll be working less then part time and not a full week over summer since i expected to spend time with him.

4) What should I be aware of & put more focus on besides training and potty?

That's all my questions for now....Having a brain fart.

Hi Juno,

1. You should keep the crate in your room and living room, where he can see you, corgis wants to be the centre of attention, where the humans are. No, your dog will test and push the envelope regardless of sleeping location.

2. Avoid dog park, petsmart, neighbourhood pee patch. It really depends on your vet's protocol and how comfortable you are with his decision, some vets feel that pups should not be over immunized, so they leave out parainfluenza.

3. An old t-shirt of yours with your scent, you can leave npr on (talk radio) or a ticking clock (mimic mama's heart beat). A kong with frozen peanut button is good.

4. Read the FAQ, set solid schedule, dogs need structure, always take him out on leash, read and re-read the FAQ.

Hi Juno! I highly recommend attending a new puppy training class. I wish I had done that when I got my first dog 16 years ago. We found a local dog training club that offered classes to the public when we got our cardigans in 2010, and it was a worthwhile investment. Good luck and enjoy puppyhood!
