luxating patellas

Emma went to the vet today and I believe this is what he said she has, it has to do with her knee popping out = luxating patellas it is just in her right back leg. She is only eight weeks old and this upsets me that she would have this and we got her from a breeder, we should be getting her papers in the mail soon. I paid $300 for her would it be fair to ask for some sort of refund? I wanted to breed her, but I don’t know if her problem is genetic? If you know anything about luxating patellas please let me know. Also should I contact the breeder about this and maybe a refund?…I don’t want to give her back she is part of the family.

This sort of sounds like what Ein has also. We got him from a breeder also. We didnt' ever contact the breeder, because we still love the guy, want to keep him, and don't plan on breeding him. We noticed on day that he was limping, then it followed for a few more days. We took him to the vet and she said that his knee out of place. He really didnt' want her playing around with his knees like she was, but she said we just needed to space out his activity and not do too many things in a row (like the dog park and doggy daycare all in the same weekend).

Look at your contract, maybe it states something about breeding defects. I also assume breeders on here will chip in.

I read that it is more likely to be cogenital is the patella moves from side to side rather and up and down. o_o

Btw, I fostered a chihuahua mix that had a trick-knee. She did not have many problems, but the vet did tell us that there is surgery that can be done if it becomes too painful/difficult for the dog to walk.

My vet also told me that if needed she could have surgery someday. It just don't know if I should say something to the breeder or not.

Yes, you should. If you have time, please write a breeder review in this section, this will help other future owners in making their decisions.

If the breeder have any written health contract, you can at least try and ask for a partial refund. LP is genetic related and it happens to a lot of smaller breed dogs and yes, it will be passed on to the next generation, so it may not be a good idea to breed her. Surgery can correct the problem and I have met several owners who've been through corrective surgery, they do just fine and sometimes surgery is not necessary and they live a perfect life :) Talk to Bill , if i remember correctly, one of his fluffies had the corrective surgery done 2 years ago. He should be able to offer you great advise. Keep us updated!
