We hoped to be moving soon as we are looking to get into a house (finally) but the process is taking forever since it is a short sale and it's more involved. In the meantime, we had to go month to month on our lease since it was up in February. Well, I just found out the apartment office has rented our apartment to someone so we have to move out by march 31st (if I were any more angry I'd turn into the Hulk). Just what I needed was more stress to add to my ever growing pile. But, we just try to roll with the punches so it looks like our best option is moving in with my father in law until we hear back on the house. He lives only a couple minutes from the house we're trying to get into so that would be good. The downside is that he has a 3 year old Pembroke who hates other dogs.

We tried introducing his Pem Sammy to Finnigan when Finn was very little and again later on and it was never good. Now that Finn is one and a half and old enough to stand up for himself, it could result in a fight which I definitely don't want. So, any advice on how to handle this? Has anyone had to deal with something like this before? I really don't want to have to keep Finn crated 24 hours a day, only allowed to be free in our room when we're home. He needs room to run. Potty breaks will be another issue. They have a dog door Sammy uses but Finn will I guess have to be crated and hopefully my husband will be able to stop by on his lunch break (as I do now) and take him out. I will be too far from my work to continue with that routine.

Another concern is whether or not Finn will pee in their house. He's gotten past peeing in our apartment but he will pee in my Mom's house. I don't know if he does it because he gets so excited to be there with her Cardi, if he doesn't realize he is not supposed to pee inside anywhere not just our apartment or if he's marking.

This is very stressful and any advice is appreciated. Once we move into our own house (if that truly works out) I'm sure I'll be asking a whole new set of questions. :)

I will keep that in mind. :)
Good luck Alice! I hope all goes well.
Thank you. I'll let you know how it goes. It'll be a real test for Finn.
Just thought I'd give you guys an update. We moved on Saturday and Finn was anxious with all the people walking in and out of the apartment. He knew something was up and whined in his crate the whole time. We let him out at one point and he ran out on the front porch and stopped at the top of the stairs whining at everyone at the bottom then suddenly decided he was going to brave the stairs (he's never tried to go down the stairs before) and got half way then I scooped him up. After that I dropped him off at the groomer's and they had him for 4 hours. I brought him back to the apartment when he was done and Finn didn't like that it was empty. He seemed nervous still and kept dribbling on the carpet.

When we took him over to our new temporary home with the in-laws he was in a very excited state. Sammy (their Pem who doesn't like other dogs) snarled at him any time he was too close or looked at him and yet Sammy wanted to follow him around. Finn took the hint and would avoid him or roll over. Finn did a lot of whining the rest of the night and when bed time came he slept in bed with us which is also a first. he's never wanted to be in bed with us.

In the morning my husband had him out back with Sammy and he said they were getting along and running around then when my father in law walked out there Sammy started snarling and Finn got down low and licking at Sammy's mouth and Sammy bit Finn's tongue. I wasn't out their luckily but he said it bled a lot but stopped quickly. After a loud yelp, Finn was acting normal and went back to playing with his ball. To avoid further bites they bought Sammy a soft muzzle so now when they are going to be out together, Sammy has it on. He still growls but at least no one will get hurt.

Finn remained wound up on Sunday and by Sunday night he was started to seem worn out and I think he was feeling the soreness in his tongue. He would try to lick my hands but barely open his mouth then stop and look sad. He did this when he tried to drink water too so not knowing how else to help him I gave him one of the Deramaxx we have for his hips and he normally chews them right up but this time he moved it around his mouth a little then dropped it, slobbered a lot then picked it back up and swallowed it whole. I felt bad for him and he didn't seem to want to be in his crate for bed so we let him sleep on the floor. He wanted up on the bed but I don't want to create new habits so he had to settle for the floor. Tonight he'll be back in the crate.

So, Any suggestions on what I can do about his tongue? probably nothing.I think that's one of those things that just needs to heal on it's own but I thought I'd ask anyway.
It's day 6 and things are going well. The boys are allowed to be together (always supervised) when Sam is wearing his soft muzzle. he adjusted to the muzzle quickly and though he would rather not have it on, he's not too bothered by it. He will still growl every once in a while but not nearly as much as before the muzzle.

The rest of the time Finnigan is gated off with access to our room, bathroom and the small hall connecting the two. He whines some but he's getting used to it. His bowls are in our bathroom and toys in our room (though when he's out he still wants to steal Sam's toys).

He has slept in the bed 3 nights, the floor once and his crate only once. I'd like him to be in his crate more because I don't want him to get out of the habit. We'll have to work on that.

He is so energetic there I don't know that he'll ever calm down. He wants to play constantly and follow everyone who walks out of a room and always know what the other dog is doing. He knows Sam doesn't like him but despite all the growls and the bite, he's determined to become buddies. Last night Sam was laying by my father-in-law on the floor and Finn went up and laid by him then started licking Sam's ear. Sam growled and walked off and Finn walked after him whining as if he just didn't understand why Sam hates him so much.

Finnigan has had a couple accidents inside. He's dribbled a handful of times but he's actually doing better than he does at my Mom's house. There he dribbles every 10 steps it seems like. The dribbling will remain a mystery but I'm glad to see it's happening less often.
I'm glad things are going well. Is Finn's tongue better? I remember a long time ago, my mom was trimming their shih-tzu's fur around her mouth and she suddenly stuck out her tongue to lick (which she does a lot) and the scissors nicked it. My mom said it bled a lot for a minute but then it stopped. Now the cut has healed but it never healed back together so she has a little split still on the side of her tongue.
His tongue is looking better. It's hard to get a good look at a dog's tongue but from what I can see, it didn't split, it was just punctures and a cut that didn't go all the way through so hopefully it will heal and look like new.
Eleven days in and things are going well still. We have our routine down and it keeps everyone happy. Finn, however, has only slept in his crate twice in all that time because after that one time in the bed he decided that this is where he prefers to be and neither of us can resist his sweet little face as he pleads for us to let him sleep up there. My father in law has been home during the day and he said if Finn isn't laying at the gate, he's up on our bed. That would explain the extreme amount of hair on it. I don't know how it happened but Finn used to not be able to jump more than a couple inches high then one day he just leaped up onto the bench out back, then into the papasan chair and now onto the bed. I'm glad to see he's able since that must mean his legs are getting stronger which will help his hips in the long run. Another good thing is that he appears to have lost some weight. Our scale is packed so I can't weigh him but my husband and I agree that he looks slimmer. Hooray, more good news for his hips!
