Monty started really scratching and licking his belly last night and this morning. He usually only does this if there is a tick that attached despite his Frontline. I looked and didn't see any ticks but it seems his belly is full of pink spots-like hives. He is also scratching near his back leg on his side but I can't see his skin through his fur coat. I put cortisone cream on the belly but that only worked for an hour or so.
I just gave him one benadryl (25mg) pill to see if that will help.

Any idea what it could be? Should I be worried or just monitor? Of course I am supposed to board him tonight and I don't want it to be anything contagious for the other dogs. The only thing I can think of is dry skin because I had to give him a bath the other day and because of the weather (snow & ice) his belly keeps getting wet and with it being cold it can't feel good. Also could street salt be a reason? I try to wipe him down when he comes in from walks.

Thank you for any advice.

My sister, bred terriers in her younger years and when my Corgi's experienced the same red spots and itching she recommened a very cheap and sensible solution! A big box of baking soda! When they had contact itching like you describe the worst is when they went through pollen in spring in grass they would get red spots and itch~ So the remedy that worked~ fill tub just up to belly or a little above with warm water ~add about a half to cup of the baking soda~ mix it in the water ~then put them in tub and splash it up on there belly and where spots are !rinse with clear water and dry them with a towel. It stops odors and itching after a few times there bumps diminished. It won't strip their coat of oil if you just treat the ares that are picking up irritants~ha ha their low belly! Well good luck hope this helps!
