plum pits

Zander just eat a plum pit. Does anyone know, are they toxic? I've read posts that say they are and some that say they aren't. He swallowed it whole right off my daughters plate. Naughty boy!

The main thing I would worry about is the pit causing an obstruction. Watch Zander closely and see if he continues to eat and has bowel movements in the next couple of days. I would say any change in his behavior would warrant a vet visit just to be on the safe side.

Also, if he ate it within the past hour or so I would call an emergency vet in your area and ask them whether they recommend having Zander vomit to see if he can bring it back up. They can do it there, or walk you through it. I had to do it once to Tomahawk when he swallowed an unused tampon whole.

Hi Shelia, yes, it contains cyanide. Give Zander a cap of hydrogen peroxide to induce vomit OR feed him an activated charcoal pill. Monitor his breathing, rush him to the ER Vet if he starts to vomit (without induce), seizure, confuse...etc. Good luck!

So far Zander is doing fine. I have been watching him closely. From what I understand it would take a lot of pits to poison him and he would have had to chew them. He did swallow it whole. He had a small bm this morning but I am keeping track until it comes out! also have a call out to my vet. Thanks everyone for the info and well wishes. I LOVE mycorgi people!

It's true, they do have to bite through the pit and eat quite a few to actually warrant a trip to the vet for cyanide poisoning. Also, if you don't see the pit come out in the next 72 hours or so, I would go to the vet and have them check it out. I hope all goes well for Zander and he comes out of this a smarter pup!

We have an Italian plum tree. Al especially eats so much of the fallen fruit that his late summer poops are full of plum pits, and about 3x normal volume, also squishy and smelly, like kibble poop. His normal raw-meat poops are hard and almost odorless. Those things go through him like plum pits through a corgi.
