Bertie Wooster is on a month of doxycycline, and after 10 days, it's starting to upset his tummy -- he threw up both dinner and breakfast yesterday. I'm sure the antibiotic is killing off his stomach flora, and adding to his nausea, so would like to give him something to help get them back, but dairy products are out (they interfere with the workings of the drug). Is there something else with active cultures I could give him? He's got 2 weeks of pills left to take, poor guy.

The most I could suggest is the pill form of probiotics but I can't say how well that would work. Could you possibly wait until the drug is finished and go to yogurt from there?
Thanks CbyA, I'll look for pills. I actually just saw a commercial for some drink for kids with a "probiotic straw"! What the heck is a probiotic straw, lol! Another question for you medical Corgi owners out there -- Bertie takes his pills at 6-7 AM and then at 4-5 PM. Would it be okay to give him a lick of yogurt mid-day? Are the pills absorbed by then, and would he digest the yogurt in good time for his PM pill?
Well, I've heard conflicting things about that. I've heard it was ok to take probiotics while on antibiotics and at the same time I've heard it isn't a good idea. It isn't a good idea cause it's killing all the probiotics (if not most of them anyway) with the antibiotics. But after researching, I wouldn't chance the dairy--but you may want to let your vet know that he's having issues with diarrhea as he may need an adjustment on his medication. Also, don't mix it with anything else unless the Vet recommended it. Have you tried feeding him a pill wrapped in a hotdog? Maybe he needs more food in his tummy--I know how much it burns and makes you feel nauseous if you don't have enough food in your stomach after taking those things--bleh.

If I may ask, what's wrong with your pup?

Probiotic straw? Man the things I miss when I don't have tv at the house...lol.

Oh, there's also cottage cheese, buttermilk, and Kefir that could be added once your pup is off his medication.
Usually Doxycycline are prescribed with pepto, this helps to counteract the upset stomach. You may want to give him Doxycycline with a full stomach.
Thanks for the thoughts. CbyA -- Bertie has anaplasmosis, yet another Lyme-related tick-borne disease and my vet is very pro aggressive treatment, hence the antibiotic. I've been giving it to him with his meals, but I think I might feed him first, then give it to him a few minutes later, when his stomach is full and already digesting stuff, see if that works. I was just reminded that I have to go to the vets tomorrow for Ethel's annual shot update, so I will ask him them about pepto or something else to settle his tummy. I had to take doxy once a while ago, and I was nauseated all the time from it -- I know just how Bertie feels! Ohhhh, the puppies, the puppies....
I was thinking it may be Lyme related after I did research. Poor puppy *hugs*. I hate taking the stuff...it almost always makes me feel nauseated and my tummy burns so much from the stuff (hmm so does vitamins now that I think about it.) I guess I never have enough in my stomach.

Hope all goes well!
If doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that upsets normal intestinal flora, remember that theirs is likely quite different from ours.
My dogs, with their disgusting snacking habits, would have no trouble re-innoculating themselves....
How right you are! A little spring mud, some goose and deer poop - and there you have it, another healthy digestive snack! I never really thought about that, thanks!
