Questions about corgis and other dogs
I know this sounds silly but it's a discussion we're having at my house. We are both madly in love with Max, our 6mo old corgi. Max needs a buddy so I have been looking for another corgi. I found one near me. The problem is my husband wants a australian cattle dog to look after the property. My problem with that is they tend to be a one person dog and we do have a new granddaughter. I'm not sure about interaction between dogs and our last dogg before Max was acattle dog and she was my husbands dog. If I touched him she would get a little ( ? ) testy. So what do you people think ? Another corgi or a protector?

Corgis make great protectors! Austrailian cattle dogs are known to be one person dogs and will certainly show aggression towards other dogs if they aren't kept busy and very well trained by their master. If you already have an uneasyness towards the breed then I would definitely say that you should get another Corgi. I very much doubt that a Corgi couldn't be trained to do anything that an Austrailian Cattle Dog could be trained to do!

We have our second shetland sheepdog and Charlie, our corgi, likes to be the boss. Shelties live to please their people and sleep with one eye open. (they can be shy and love to bark,too) I don't think Charlie would have liked it if we brought home another dominant, bossy herding dog. I think we could have brought home any puppy and Charlie would have adjusted just fine as long as he gets to be top dog. I don't think all corgis are as bossy as Charlie. He acts like a big dog who just happens to have short legs. We would have gotten another corgi but I have a hard time keeping up with the shedding.
We used to have chow chows. We loved them very much but they were definitely not good with anyone other than the two of us. We chose more family friendly breeds when the chows passed over the rainbow bridge.

ACD's are tough dogs and do have a tendency to be quite aloof to everyone except "their" person. With a new grandaughter it would not be my choice. While corgis are not guard dogs they certainly let you know when anyone or anything is lurking.

Corgis are herd dogs, so they can be taught cattle... They can be just as fierce and loyal as any other dog, and will work great as a team if trained. I would do the Corgi but I am biased since I have 5...lol

Thanks everyone! I want to let you know we decided on the corgi. It took a little time to explain about the acd but my hubby came around and decided I might have a point. He still is a little uneasy about Max as a protector. Max is scared of everything.

Max is still very young though. I don't think Ein even barked until he was several months old and now its hard to get him to stop lol.

Don't underestimate a corgi when it comes to protection. Some are just are fierce as a big dog when someone they love is in trouble. I've heard stories of corgis losing their life trying to protect the ones they love. Hence, the big dog in a little dog's body.
Late one night, both of my dogs ran to the front door, barking and aggressive growling like I've never heard before in my life. I got up and flipped the lights on, check outside and even sent them out the back door for a quick look around. Didn't see anything and they didn't bark aggressively anymore. A couple of days later, during the afternoon light, I noticed handprints beside my front door and around my bedroom window, where someone was peeking in! I didn't notice them earlier because it was dark in the morning when I left for work and dark when I came home.
With those large ears, they hear everything, and are a good warning signal, and the person probably thought I had german shepards with as low and loud of a bark Duncan has. And I'm sure if they did get in, my other dog, a corgi/chow mix would have attacked. She has the chow personality more so than a corgi.

This is true, corgis make great watch dogs, and it may be that Max is a little more shy than some corgis. The next one you get may show you a much different personality, and the two together would make a formidable team in alert mode!
