I'm trying to put together a 'road kit' for the dogs and am going down the list of things I need to include. I'm planning on some type of insulated bag (cooler or diaper bag maybe), that will hold a portable water bowl, bottle of water, poop baggies, spare lead, and some treats.

What am I forgetting to include in 'must haves' for the vehicle when I take the dogs along?

Like the proverbial umbrella: a trash bag and a roll of paper towels :-)  I also like a dog towel, if rain is a possibility.

LOL Those are two things we always pack in all our vehicles anyway, but definitely a must have! (Learned that the first time my son threw up in the car!)

Good idea!

Baby butt wipes just in case of "mud butt".

Great idea!

Be sure to have ID tags on the dogs. Something for them to lay on like a towel or blanket. Something to cover your car seat to try and keep off dog hair, lol. I use an old sheet and cut holes in it for the seat belt straps on the dogs' harnesses. It wouldn't hurt to keep a copy of the rabies certificate in your car. You never know what might happen. A picture of your dog also in case they get lost. Talk to your vet about a first aid kit for the dogs esp if you are travelling any distance from home. All could be kept in a tote bag. A cooler wouldn't be necessary. The water doesn't have to be cold. It's nice for us, we feel better about it, but the dogs don't really care! I always have one of those carabiner clips on each leash handle. It's very handy if you have to tie the dog up to something.

for our last road trip we got a print out from the vet of all their shots/vacations - just in case.  Also we took their doggy beds so that they would have a familar place to sleep.

Thanks, guys! You're giving me some great ideas! I'm not really looking at long trips, but more just something I can toss in the truck on the spur of the moment when we head out for the day. Brodie LOVES to go for rides so we take him with us everywhere we can and we're starting to take Kadi more and more. Since it's getting hot, I want to be prepared in case we were to breakdown somewhere. Since we live in the sticks, nowhere we go is 'close' but rather a highway trip. One reason I was thinking the diaper bag or cooler was because they would be waterproof from both sides. The carabiner is a fantastic idea! My dogs all wear their tags all the time and both the corgis are chipped so that is added protection, although it doesn't keep them from harm.

If you don't already have some, I would add some mesh screens for the back windows, so you can block the sun coming in on the dogs, as you do with small kids.

We're good there because all our vehicles have tinted windows! :D

A first aid kit (for you AND the pooches) might be a good idea if there isn't one already.  A spare collar, too, in case one breaks.  Some wet wipes.

I always keep a spare leash and collar, treats, shampoo dog wipes and brush, and poo bags in the car.
