Skinned Carpal Pads

I was playing fetch with Triley this weekend on asphalt and he seemed fine and happy the whole time and was fine on the walk home (no limping). But, when we got home I noticed that his carpal pads on his front legs were just raw and almost bloody. I think that he skinned off all of the dead skin and scraped them up while scooching to a halt when he was retrieving the ball. We flushed them with a rinse from the vet and also sprayed antibotics on them (also from the vet) and they seem to be healing, but the whole incident was so strange. Have any of you had this happen with your corgis? I feel like such a bad corgi-mom to have let this happen!

This has happened to Didi before after a long hike in the cold, over rocks, under trees and up steep inclines. I just washed it up and we both healed our scratches and blisters together. :3

We had something along the same lines happen with our male and followed the same washing and anitbotic salve. He insisted on licking the area and that kept it so irritated that we ended up having to spray it with bitter apple which i KNOW had to burn bad but we just ran out of choices.

I had exact same thing happened to Dee Dee. I was just playing with her on our long driveway, and she seemed to really enjoy fetching her favorite shoe toy! I think she scraped her carpal pads the same way as yours... halting on concrete! She didn't seem to be in pain at all, and I didn't even notice it was scraped until I was cleaning her feet when we were about to go in the house. I thought it was dirt, leaf, or something, and I actually pulled it off her feet!! No, you are not bad mom. I was... Well, maybe not. Even then, she didn't act like she was in pain at all! I jsut cleaned her feet as usual, and kept eye on it for next few days. It healed fine, and she still wants to play fetch on our driveway (I don't let her any more...). I think I'll stick to dirt area next time! :)

Maybe Triley's pads were not inured to that sort of surface?
We play soccer on asphalt all the time. We play hard. I've had only one pad injury, that was when it was wet, skidding on slick pavement? But we often play in the rain (Seattle).
Al had a HUGE flapper in his carpal pad ("C" in the photo). Dramatic! Obvious limping. A thick flap of callous the size of a nickel peeled off. Might have been the result of a large earlier blister, or might have been result of skidding on slippery pavement. I washed it with water and did nothing else. Fine within days. I left the flapper on to protect new skin underneath.

My current plan for backcountry/mountain pad injury is: baby socks taped on with surgical tape, or wrap foot with that sticky gauze. Anybody have a better suggestion? I've sen various dog boots; any recommendations?

That happens to Dragster when he plays by our pool. One time he came in and his paws were bloody and scraped up. They make stuff called Ginseng Violet, which is a natural herb. Its good for all cuts and scrapes on dogs. I call it purple medicine because it really is purple and will stain clothes very easily. Just put some on his pads, it comes with a small brush type thing. I use it on Drags all the time. Just watch him and dont let him lick it until its dry and stuff. Hope that helps!

Thanks so much! I feel much better knowing that this has happened to other corgis. It was just so sudden and strange, I didn't know what to think. Triley says thank you too for the medicine and protection advice!
