Took Merlin to the vet this afternoon because he has had decreased appetite over past couple week and decreased water intake in past 24 hrs. even though he acted like he felt fine.  He was as obstinate as last time during exam.  He had low grade fever 102.3. Vet thinks probably needed de worming because of his nasty habit of eating the poop of any other species he encounters.  So he switched him to Trifexis (was on Revolution flea control last application May 12) and put him on anitbiotic - Cephalexin just in case there is some type of infection.  So I gave him both meds when we got home from vet (4hrs.ago) with food.  Now he is sick - has thrown up 3 times. I am not sure if first time was in the first hour window mentioned on Trifexs box cause he did it in another part of house and I did not find til about 2 hrs after.  I did not give him another Trifexis as mentioned on box and am now glad I did not.  Doesnt make sense to me why you would give a second dose if first one didn't stay down anyway. My last dog did not tolerate Cephalexin and am not sure if Trifexis or Cephalexin caused this barfing.  Gonna call vet first thing in the morning but was wondering if anyone has had any similar issues with either or both.

I would guess Cephalexin would cause the vomiting especially if it was not given with food. And just an FYI 102.3 is hardly a fever. It is VERY common for a dog who hates the vet and is nervous to have a temperature of 102-103. If he is as obstinate as you say I would hardly call that a fever and expect him to have a temp of at least 102. If the vet prescribed the cephalexin based on "fever" alone I would just skip giving it all together. Did the vet give the Trifexus as the de-wormer? If so, this is not an appropriate medication to get rid of a possible infestation. The heartworm medication strictly works to PREVENT intestinal parasites from developing into an infestation but if he is worried that your pup has an active infestation from eating poop then a better course of action would be giving an actual de-wormer such as pyrantel or panacur or something along those lines. We have never had a patient report vomiting so far from Trifexus, but vomiting and diarrhea are common with any antibiotic.

sorry you guys are going thru this..hope Merlin feels better soon

We used Sentinel for years but my vet is replacing it with Trifexis, so I switched Zin onto it this month and I haven't seen an issues.  ..Alfie, I kept on sentinel as I needed to change him off Frontline to Vectra -D due to  the frontline burning his skin and leaving sores. I only wanted to change one thing at a time.  Alfie also was on clavamox to help the sores caused by the frontline to heal. Every time he's on clavamox or cephalexin, I always have to add some yogurt to his food at least twice a day or he has tummy issues varying from gas to vomiting to diarrhea.  IF he gets, the yogurt- there are no issues.

I'd recommend that move to a bland diet for a little while in frequent small amounts-- rice, chicken ( skin free), low sodium chicken broth, maybe some pumpkin -- and yes, definitely contact your vet.

It's the Cephalexin.

thanks guys I think he is already feeling a bit better after just getting it out of his tummy. He ate a couple ice cubes before bed thinks its  treat - go figure.I suspected the cephalexin cause of problems I had before. The vet started the trifexus and gave me pyrantel to give him in 2 weeks. I doubled checked instructions after Melissa replied to see if I got something backward.  Was gonna ask about another antibiotic but think I will just wait on this. He does get way worked up head butted me good while I was trying to help hold him. Thanks again
