We just got our first Corgi puppy and I am a bit confused on what type of food I should feed him. Our Vet told us that Purina was a good food and then I have heard that it is a horrible dog food and then I have heard that same about Iams, Science Diet... So, I don't know what to feed him! I went ahead and bought a small bag of Iams just to get us by until I did some research on what type to feed him!
So help! Anyone have any suggestions or information on this?
and
How much do I feed him? Our Vet gave us some canned food b/c he's belly was upset and he wasn't feeling his best so the vet wanted something that would be light on his stomach but told us give little bitty amounts several times a day so to equal 1/4 cup. He seems to always be starving and wanting more! so how much should I feed him?

Welcome Rebecca, I think this thread will help you, it has over 70 replies. Before making this personal choice, you may check out this guideline by the FDA as well. It'll give you a clearer perspective.
I know... so many opinions can be so frustrating. I feed Caesar Nutro's Natural Choice Puppy Bites. I am sure some people will say it is AWESOME and some will say it is the worst food second only to poison (lol - isn't that how it always goes??) But Caesar likes it and developmentally he's right where he needs to be. Normal weight, normal length, normal everything and no stomach issues. It's a bit pricey but my favorite. Not sure about canned foods... I personally prefer the dry food so don't have a pick.
I am in the same boat. From what I've read so far, one of the biggest things is to avoid fillers like corn the puppy can't digest as well. My breeder recomended Nutri Source, but I've had issues finding that food at the store. I picked up some "organic" food that seemed to have good ingredients until I find something better.

The one thing I do notice.... he is always hungry. Be sure you watch how much you feed your baby, or they'll eat themselves to sleep! I've been feeding my boy about 2x per day in 1/4 to 1/3 cup amounts by suggestion of my breeder. He seems ok with this amount so far, but I'm sure after my first vet visit next Friday I'll have conformation on how much I feed him.
My puppy eats Nutro puppy bites as well, he seems to get a little bored with it so i'll have to add in warm water sometimes or Nutro wet food, but so far he's very healthy, a good weight, temperment, mentality, etc.
We feed Juneaux BlueBuffalo Puppy, and she loves it. From the research we've ever done on dog food, this one is the best, to us. Look up the website--there'll be more info on it. I think nutrition is the one thing dog owners should spend the most on.
Look into Wellness and Canidae, bith foods we have been very happy with. Good luck!
Where can I purchase these types at?
Petco sells Wellness.
For Canidae and some of the others mentioned, you need to go to the smaller pet stores. I think if you go to the brand's websites, you can search for local stores that carry it.
BlueBuffalo can be purchased at Petsmart. Its not sold at Petland, and I'm not sure about Petco.
I was also wondering about this issue as well today( no kidding!) I took Superstar to the vet and he said that Purina, Iams, Pedigree contains by-products, and I was like ugh! Superstar was dehydrated and underweight! My vet was questioning me why she was underweight, and I was like telling him I was feeding her three times 1 cup a day ( what he recommended) and then he asked me what kind of food I was giving her and he was like "Red Flag!" ..."dont give her that kind of food!" she is pooping all the times, and then she eats the $#!+ from the cats and hers too! and I was like OMG! disgusting, but thats how she got her nutrients, and so thats why she was underweight and then she started to have bloody diarrhea and vomiting. So I asked him what kind of food I would give her to gain weight and health, and of course, he would recommend Science Diet, but I read it DOES have by-products. Its just a name and how would he tell me she needed to eat holistic food and thinking Science Diet is one of them? so I went to Petco , and the gentleman showed me all of the holistic food. He recommended Wellness, Pinnacle Holistic, and Solid Gold.
The vets will recommend Science Diet because the Science Diet company gives lots of $$ to the veterinary schools. SD is just as bad as the others he told you NOT to feed your pup!

The ones they had at Petco sound a lot better. We feed Sidney Wellness and he likes it fine. He has a beautiful coat and good solid poops (that he does NOT try to eat, thankfully). Since it is better nutrition, you will feed him less and the cost balances out. Sid gets 1/2 cup in the am, and 1/2 cup at night, with a little something added in for variety.
Yeah, Science Diet sells for its name, people get fooled about their brand, thinking "Dr.Hills" is a great doctor that came up with this type of food. I bought Wellness for Superstar, and she kind of not wanting to taste it first cause its brand new food for her, so I mixed a tablespoon of Wellness wet food with her dry food so it could taste right for her. Also, I got her a high-calorie paste to get energy for her, since she barely eats and Omega 3 powder to prevent her from shedding a lot!
