I have a six month old corgi. My vet recommended that I not alter him until he is almost one year old. However, I have friends with corgis who say that in order to avoid any aggression, it is important to alter him as soon as possible. He is not aggressive at all yet. What do people think?

Debbie's correct (as usual), but many corgi owners don't put the time into working through the issues that come from leaving a dog unaltered. I usually suggest to my classes that the watch for signs of leg-lifting and use that as their benchmark, as long as the dog is around the 6-month mark.
We altered Spencer at 6 months. It was perfect timing because his testosterone was rearing its ugly head and he was becoming quite a handful! He is now a very happy, calm almost 11month old who is the light of my life!
Right around six months, Trunks started humping everything. That is when I knew he was ready to be neutered. Our breeder told us between six and eight months. He was neutered around 6 and a half months.
