Hello everyone! In preperation for the big event of hopefully bringing home puppy soon, I wanted to ask for any suggestions/tips for potty training my puppy at night without crating him. I was very lucky that my last puppy potty trained in about two hours, but I realize that this is not likely to happen again, so I want to prepare for the worst. My usual method is to block puppy on bed with me at night, with no way off the bed except over me. I have found all my puppies would rather wake me up to take them out than climb over me or pee on the bed. I also usually keep a couple toys on the bed for nightowl distraction. Anybody have any further advice?

I would think this would be hard to do without a crate. I think a Corgi would try to get off the bed even over the top of you (they are quite determined) and could get hurt or damage something. I would not be able to sleep myself if my Corgis were not crated at night. They are safe and comfy and so am I. Leo has slept on the bed with me a few times before I got Randy and he did okay but did jump down when he wanted to and it it too high to be safe I think. Leo is almost a year old and trustworthy in the house alone, but I still did not feel comfortable with him loose at night. Is there some reason you don't want to crate your pup? It is not mean to crate them and in fact mine both enjoy their crates as private spaces or dens.
No, I don't have anything against crating, I just never have crated my dogs. I don't crate my cats, so why should I crate my dogs? I was looking into getting some steps for my bed so he would not have to jump off. The nice thing about them having to climb over the top of you, is that's what wakes you up so you can take them out. I always try to get up every 2-3 hours at night during the first couple weeks to let new puppies outside.
