Hi all, so I'm just curious, what jump height do your Corgis fit into? Philip has to jump 12" by AKC standard.

I compete in AAC (agility association of canada) so Wicca jumps 6" Special. But started at 10"- I dropped her to specials for the lower a-frame height.

In CKC (like your AKC) she jumps 8"
Dally measures 10.12" tall at the withers, so she jumps 8 inches. You don't HAVE to jump your Corgi at 12", in fact, if you think he's even remotely struggling, I'd move him down to PREFERRED and jump him at 8". It'll be better for himin the long run because it's easier on the shoulders and back.
Good to know about the preferred classes, I'll look into that.
Philip is about 11.5" at the withers, but he doesn't seem to mind the 12" jumps. We are still training and haven't gone to a competition yet, so I still have time to make up my mind :)
What does it mean when you say, "What jump height a Corgi fits into"? Is that for professional agility training? I want to get my corgi into fly ball, but first we want to get Thiago to atleast jump ONE obstacle. Crawl before you walk i guess. I tried to get him to run while on a leash then jump a box, and he wasnt having it! Maybe because the box was bigger than him?Should I not use a leash? He will be 14 months next week. What is a safe beginner height?
Yes, when you do Agility competitively, the height of the jumps that your dog has to go over depends on the height of the dog. Each organization has slightly different requirement, but here are the AKC standards as an example:
- 8 Inches: For dogs 11 inches and under at the withers.
- 12 Inches: For dogs 14 inches and under at the withers.
- 16 Inches: For dogs 18 inches and under at the withers.
- 20 Inches: For dogs 22 inches and under at the withers.
- 24 Inches: For dogs over 22 inches at the withers.
I'm not sure on flyball rules, but you should check with whatever club you are thinking of competing with. I would think he shouldn't need to jump any higher than 12" - that would be too hard on his joints.

As far as training a dog to jump, my suggestion would be start with a very low to the ground jump (4-8" max) and just get him going over it reliably before raising it up. Place him right near the jump, hold the treat on the other side and encourage him to step over. Leash is good, it keeps him from running off and you can gently tug to encourage direction. Once he steps over on command reliably, you can start raising the height. He'll get it in no time I'm sure :)
My Dudley is squarely in the 12" jump height category in AKC. Dudley measured 13 1/8" at the withers. However I chose to enter him Preferred for the first year so he only jumped 8". Two weeks ago we went to the first trial where I entered him at his 12" jump height. Dudley had some orthopedic issues when he was a puppy so I wanted him to practice, gain confidence, and go to a jumping seminar before I had him start launching over 12" jumps. If they change the rules in AKC and start offering a PACH, I might go back to Preferred. That's really the only reason I moved him up to 12". I think he has the potential to earn a MACH so I wanted him to have the opportunity.

While I'm here replying anyway, just thought I'd point out that the site you linked has a mistake - for AKC the 8" cutoff has long ago been raised to 11" at withers. Also, NADAC has a rule exception for long backed dogs (including both Corgis!) that allows them to go one height lower and still be in regular class.

Rules change often, so for those starting out, whatever organization you choose to compete with, make sure to look at their official rules :)

We measured for 8 in CPE and would get an exception in NADAC and jump 8. In AKC we would measure for 12, which I don't want really to do. Ty can jump 12, but I think it is a bit hard on him. He is a pretty small corgi. We are new and are sticking with CPE for now anyway.

If you say he's a small Corgi, are you sure he would measure into 12" in AKC? Have you had an actual VMO look at him? Try a couple different VMO judges, you never know and might get into a lower height. Philip is a big guy, and contrary to my original post, when he got his official measurements after turning 2, he actually measured down into 8". His height card says he is 11" even :)

I do hear that CPE is nice for starting though. Good luck in your Agility-ing :)

My boy is 12" in AKC but 8" in CPE. I've been training at 12" without any issues, but have been considering going lower to preserve Wylie's hips and back. We'll see how it goes over the next few months.

Tucker fits into the 12" group. We have been training over 8" mostly. We haven't competed yet.
