Isn't that the truth about class being for us more than the dog at one point? Dudley totally knows what he's doing but I frequently have melt downs on the course. I lose where I am, don't know what to do next or just totally handle the situation wrong.

As for weave poles, different training methods work for different dogs. I think it's best to try to get them to think and understand what you want with the poles. They really need to learn that entrance and that they need to weave through all the poles regardless of how many are in front of them. We have two corgi's and used different methods with each of them. With Taffy we used luring. I don't recommend doing that. Basically we have to babysit her through the poles or she won't get them. We have to show her the entrance and motion her through every pole. With Dudley I tried channel weaves. He didn't get it. Then I tried Weave-a-matic. He kind of understood but not really. Then I tried 2x2 by Susan Garrett. That really clicked for him. He understands what he's supposed to do. Once he "got it" then it was just a matter of practice to get him familiar with the rhythm. Once he got his rhythm down then he really started driving through the poles. I think every dog is different and you have to find what turns the light on for them.

Concerning weaves- it really is just practice, practice, practice! You also have to consider that corgi's are longer dogs, which means they really have to learn to maneuver their bodies through the poles.

Good luck!

Beth-
Thats what I always say in agility class- its to teach me, not my corgi! I am the one who messes up all the time lol

Jack just had his second agility class last night and I'm so excited! He's very drivey and focused. If only his handler were more coordinated. :-)

Welcome Amanda, Matt and Oliver! You will enjoy agility. Charlie is two now and we have been training for over a year. We both LOVE it!!!

Hi Kelsey!

Pepper's been doing agility for two seasons now (Summer '09 and '10) and anyone with short dogs has a particularly hard time with weave poles it seems. From my experience, it takes more time than the other obstacles because it's not very intuitive for the dogs. Just practice, have patience, and look for the small victories first!

Hi all, just thought I'd check in :) Philip and I have recently started going to trials. Mostly AKC, and a bit of USDAA. He is still in AKC Novice, but has gotten 1 Q in JWW and 2 in Standard so far. Can't wait to move on to Open!
I also started a blog geared towards our Agility adventures in case anyone wants to check it out:

I'll be doing a recap after every trial, but also hope to include useful info about rules, procedures, equipment, training, etc. Feel free to follow our progress on there, and/or request content via comments.
